Hi JBooysen, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Thank you. However, UAC is just the security feature that asks the user for permission/confirmation before when an application is requesting to run as administrator. It does not always prevent the need to manually set an application to run as administrator though if it needs to be. :(

Hi pRose DC,

It would be nice to have exceptions for programs in UAC like in a firewall program., but that is not an option in Vista. It's all or none. :(

Sorry,
Shawn

And therein lies the problem with UAC. If they would have just included a check box to turn off UAC for programs you have already approved it might actually be useful. Why they didn't do this is beyond me. Although I'm certain that an update could make it possible.

Hi TrevB,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I hate to say this, but I would avoid installing any Symantec Norton antivirus program on Vista until they can fix the problem. There has been so many reported problems with Norton and Vista it isn't even funny anymore. I would recommend using something like the free Avast antivirus instead. It may have just saved you a headache later by not installing.

Shawn

Agreed, those anti virus programs are worse than the viruses they are trying to prevent. Norton dropped the ball years ago when they failed to impliment adware and anti spyware into their anti virus during the XP fiasco days of insecurity. I'll never use Norton or Mcaffe again. :D

Hi all,

I use a program callled Xfire which lets me connect to game servers by selecting a friends name and joining them via Xfire's ability to follow to that server.

Under Vista, I am now confronted with the requirement of the program requiring UAC elevation to perform that task. I used it all the time under XP, but have just purchased a new computer with Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Is there any way I can allow Xfire to have the necessary permissions to perform the tasks it used to do?

Thanks in advance,
Leviathan.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your reply.

I am have just tried running Xfire in compatability mode. It is still coming up with the same message.

xfirescreenshot.jpg

I have turned off the UAC to test the program, and it works fine with the UAC turned off, but I wanted to try to avoid that if I could.

I am also running the main game I play in compatability mode as an administrator, but that also prompts me to allow the program to run every time I start the game.

Is there any other options where the UAC can be forced to allow a program to run or are there other permissions I can try?

Thanks again,
Leviathan.

My Computer

Leviathan,

You might also try running it in Windows XP (SP2) compatibility mode to see if it runs better in it.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks again for your prompt reply.

I had already set both of the programs to run in XP (SP2) mode, as I had thought that might also help. Unfortunately that was also unsuccessful.

Im really bad at computers so would be great if you could help me out here?

My Computer

Hello Zidnea, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Are you trying to merge the reg file while logged into a administrator account? You will not be able to do this from within a standard account.

Did you get the UAC approval prompts when you tried to merge the reg file?

In addition:
Right click on the .reg file and click on Open With. Select Registry Editor if listed. If it is not there, the browse to C:\Windows\regedit.exe, and select the regedit application file.

Hope this helps,

Zidnea,

Are you logged into an administrator account? You can check to see if your account is one by opening the Control Panel (Classic View) and click on the User Accounts icon. Under your user name will be the type of account it is.

If you are, then it sounds like you will need to do a clean reinstall if Vista.
