Vista not detecting Radeon HD 5450

Wow I can't believe that I didn't think of that. What is the exact make and model? Radeon HD 5450 is for the graphics chip however the card would have been assembled by another manufacturer (see here: Newegg.com - Radeon HD 5450). I ask because as you can see there are different ones and a few that I saw appear to have an additional spot for a power source whereas another didn't. If you don't have everything connected correctly then the card won't get enough power to function properly. See and follow the manufacturer's instruction manual. Also note the minimum recommended wattage for your PSU is 400 whereas your PSU is 250 watts. The card won't function as well with so little wattage than it would if your system met the recommended requirements.

This particular card is a saphire radeon HD 5450 512MB video card. There are no power connectors on the card.

When I upgraded the Windows 7 computer with a new video card, I took out the Radeon 5450 and the powersupply.

I then took this power supply and put it into the Vista, replacing the 250w power supply.

Have you tried pulling the NVIDIA card?

If you do that and install the radeon card, then you might be able to install Catalyst.

I didn't put in the Nvidia card until after I had already tried the radeon

250W power supply and two graphics cards? You definitely need more power, especially if one of them is 512Mb.

Getting back to basics.

Let's start with no graphics card installed.

When you installed the Radeon and booted up, did Vista say that it detected your device and that it was installing the software?

Nope. I went into device manager and it wasn't listed there either.

Either something is preventing the installation or the slot you're using isn't working properly. It might be beneficial to reinstall all the motherboard drivers.

Allright. Stupid question- how do I go about doing that?

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Go to the manufacturer's website and look for chipset drivers.

From HP's website correct? Because if it's on ASUS's website, I don't see any links for downloading drivers.

If I don't change it in the BIOS then It will use the Integrated and wont use any add on video cards. I went to the AMD website and downloaded the latest version of Catalyst, but after it installs and I go to the folder it installed to on the hard drive the only thing in there is a folder labeled hydravision. I thought it might be because Windows can't detect the card or what.

before you downloaded the driver, did you download the hardware detection to find the correct driver. run the detection hardware it will take you to the correct driver, save file and then uninstall any software you have installed. open saved file by double clicking it and follow instruction. reboot and see what it does for you then.

amd has a download for detecting hardware, its called automacticaly detect and install. click download and it detects your hardware and take you to the page with correct driver to download.

Will it work even if windows won't detect the new hardware?

hard to say, you can try it, it doesnt install any drivers or such. you might try removing both cards, install the radeon card where the other one is at and see if windows reconizes it then and if it does place other card in the extra slot and see if it is being reconized. if it doesnt then you know slot is bad. i prefer using ATI grphic cards cause i had better luck with them. just my opinion. nvidia and gforce never lasted as long as ATI did. i have an ATI graphic chipset, my sis HP had an nvidia, we bought our laptops in the same year, mine still works hers dont. chipset went out. she gets error no video output. what being left out is windows chooses the best option for it to work, your other card just might have higher graphic rating the the radeon and chosed to disable it from working. i dont remember where its at but theres an option to let windows choose what is best.

The nvidia is a PCI card and the radeon is a PCI-E x16, so I can't really switch them :/. I'll try and see if I can get the download from amd

if theyre both cards then you should beable to swap them around. unless one has different slot type. chipsets are embedded to mother board near procesor.

by the specs of your computer it had a gma 950 graphics and it does support PCI-E x16
