Vista start up problem

Hey guys,

Windows Vista won't start up anymore. Various problems occur during the start up that prevent it from starting up. It occurred around 3pm or 4pm today when i was just on the internet and talking with my friend on MSN and then BAM! BSOD! The PC rebooted itself and came back up, but then it began giving me a looping 'windows explorer.exe has stopped working' error. So I rebooted again.

I tried Last known good configuration and it didn't work. Gives me a flashing BSOD and the PC restarts itself. Attempts to boot into normal mode sometimes brings BSOD and sometimes just stays black before the circular Windows vista logo that should appear.

Safe mode works fine. I'm currently on safe mode at the moment. It works fine. I've tried Start Up repair using my Vista CD and nothing. It says no errors were found. I've tried Norton scan and nothing there.

Here are my specs:

OS: Vista Home Premium 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8Ghz
RAM: 4GB (2x 2GB Sticks)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 260 896MB
DirectX: 10
HDD: 500GB Seagate 7200 RPM
Motherboard: GIGABYTE EP45-UD3R
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Sound: Onboard Realtek HD Sound

If you guys can get this fixed for me... that would be great... because I gotta print off a school project for tomorrow.

go into c:\windows\minidump and zip the dump file *.dmp, and upload it to us using the attachment tool (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form

thanks

Sorry for the late reply Ken. Had some people over.

Earlier, I decided to uninstall a program called 'Daemon Tools'. Did that and Windows booted up fine! No problems at all. Worked on it for about two hours. Brother played a game on it and when I attempted to play a game afterwards, whatcha know... BSOD. Restarted windows and another BSOD...

Here are the minidumps for those two recent BSOD's.

Since you have other people on your pc...
Go ahead and run a full virus scan and malware check (malwarebyes).

I debugged the second dump, it says the faulty module is ntkrnlmp.exe which is invoked by dwm.exe

The first dump's faulty module is win32k.sys, which was invoked by csrss.exe, isn't that a server program? Not sure.

I have yet to search what that program is or why it caused the system to dump, just thought I'd throw that out there really fast.

I'm lost as to why those would cause a crash. I would do a system virus scan. Also, in the start search menu, type this: mrt.exe then hit enter, do a 'full' scan then let it run, it will take awhile...

lol well I am a bit more computer savvy than your average computer user. Just not with too many errors. Also, on those two dumps, one was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and the other was BAD_POOL_HEADER. I'm sure you saw that, but I thought i'd point that out.

I closed out the debugger :( but I know the win32k.sys is a driver. I'm going to take a deeper look at it and see if I can find an answer. Give me a min.

I'm uploading a batch file, please download it, save it to your desktop, unzip it then run it as 'Administrator'. This is done by right clicking the file and choosing the 'Run as administrator' option. Its going to save a log of all your currently running processes, I would like to see what is running in the background.

P.S. Have you ran SFC?

SFC is system file checker but this sounds like a driver issue. Win32.sys and csrss are important system files. Are all of your drivers updated?

Sounds good. I'm currently in safe mode though, just to tell you. And as for the batch file, can I run it while still scanning?

And what's SFC? =P

Hmm, you can't boot into normal desktop? I dont think safe mode results will be sufficient. SFC is system file checker. Iim going to upload a shortcut to SFC, it will scan, then save a log to the desktop. Please zip the text file it creates and post it. Thanks :)

Oh, I forgot, This shortcut HAS to be ran as 'Admin'

I did a quick google search and a MS forum points to software incompatibility.
