Vista start up problem

What exactly were you doing when it began? Things you do everyday or was it something else? I mean install new programs (besides norton)? Delete something?

Pretty much everyday stuff. I was on Firefox and chatting on msn and then BAM! BSOD. Although, in the past months ( 3 - 4?), windows was unable to start twice due to a flashing blue screen, but last known good config fix that.

Did you change the .dmp file settings? They should be recorded.

I didn't change the .dmp settings at all.

And another problem has come up. I installed the LAN driver successfully, but the audio driver won't extract from it's 7-zip self-extractor. Various files in become corrupt during extraction, including the setup.

P.S. i am so sorry to keep you guys up so late with my frustrating problem. I will be forever greatful if you can resolve it. :)

So the lan driver installed perfect? No errors? If the realtek audio driver won't install, try going into device manager [start search > device > choose device manager > accept UAC > find the 'Sound' box > expand it > uninstall the Realtek driver > reboot and let Vista find its own]

Failure again. Yet another BSOD and no dump for it... =/

The blue screen had this:

'Stop: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\System Root\System32\ntdll.dll'

That's ALL it had. It was different than the previous {Fatal System Error} One.

The SFC scan brought nothing up? If your system is this corrupted its time for a reinstall.

Ok, I searched your error and the most common answers were:

1.) Re-Install Vista
2.) Hardware Conflict
3.)Use the Vista DVD to repair the installation.

Since the only driver we haven't updated is the DVD drive and since it is producing blue screens at boot (vista will check the DVD drive as it boots) try updating that driver.

Go back to device manager (start search device > choose device manager)

Then find the CD/DVD Rom box (somewhat towards the top) Expand it and uninstall the driver, then reboot. Upon boot up, re open device manager and install it, but choose the 'Search the internet' option instead of from file

The SFC scan brought nothing up? If your system is this corrupted its time for a reinstall.

It stops at 17% and says this:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
FINDSTR: cannot open Nikkhah\desktop\sfcdetails.txt

If that .txt file is there upload, delete it, then reboot and run sfc /scannow again.

I don't see such file.

Tried that. It reverted itself back to the 2006 driver. I'm guessing that's the only driver.

So i'm guessing reinstall? if I install it over my current windows, will it overwrite everything?

You can use the Ubuntu live cd to back up your data. Download it, stick it in the drive, reboot, then look for your partition on the places menu. Navigate and back up to an external hard drive.

So it still crashed? One last attempt at this. In device manager, go thru every single drop down box, are there any items with gray boxes, or yellow triangles?

Yes you would have to reformat then install vista again on a clean hard drive... so unless you back up your info you need its history...

Try running SFC again, see what happens... If that doesn't work, try running chkdsk, mind you chkdsk will take quite some time and you have no access to the computer while its running...

To run chkdsk: open an elevated command prompt [start search > cmd > right click it > choose 'Run as administrator' > accept UAC > then type chkdsk /f /r %systemdrive% > hit enter > it will ask to schedule this task > type 'y' > hit enter then re boot.]

SFC is a no go.

As for flashing, i've always been skeptical about that. I've heard some risky things that could happen...

Yes, things can go awry fast when doing that... Alright so I'm guessing there were no yellow triangles or gray boxes? Is it still crashing? One last driver that could definitely help but cant find it. Who makes your video card? I know its an nvidia but who made it? ie PNY

EVGA. And ya, no yellow triangles or gray boxes.
