The Windows Internet Explorer 9 Update did work, the remainder won't.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi mlynch02:

Just confirm at Control Panel | System and Maintenance | System that Service Pack 2 (KB948465, rel. May 2009) installed correctly.

Vista System Information Service Pack.png

Please note that there is a known issue with Vista SP2 where Windows Update will hang on "Checking for updates..." as soon as Service Pack 2 is installed during a clean reinstall. See page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours for instructions on how to apply 4 or 5 required "speed up" patches (.msu standalone installers) that will have to be manually installed once your SP2 is applied in order to receive the ~ 200 security updates released between May 2009 and the end of extended support for Vista SP2 on 11-Apr--2020. Since you just upgraded to IE9 I assume you'll need all five "speed up" patches mentioned in those instructions.

kb3205638, kb4012583 and kb4015380 were installed.
kb4019204 and kb4018271 were not.
kb4019204 installed but insisted on a restart.
The restart appears to be running but taking a very long time.

Hi mlynch:

Are all five "speed up patches (KB3205638 / KB4012583 / KB4015380 / KB4019204 plus KB4018271 for IE9) now installed, and if so is a manual Windows Update [Windows Update | Check for updates] able to find and install your remaining ~ 180 to 200 missing updates and patch you back to Vista SP2's end of extended support on 11-Apr-2017?

If you're still having problems installing KB4019204 let me know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit Vista OS, and please confirm you disabled automatic Windows Updates [Windows Update | Change settings | Important updates | Never check for updates (not recommended)] and re-booted (the re-boot is critical) as instructed in Step # 1 of the instructions <here> in m#l's thread before running the .msu installer.

The bulk updates, 200 plus were already installed when I first posted.
I am currently down to seven which will not install, they include Net Framework 6 and Windows Live.
Since I use a functioning W7 PC to communicate with this Forum, I do not have a list to present you.
I will get a Thumb Drive to copy what isn't installing and bring it over here to post later.

HI mlynch02:

For KB4014984 (Quality Rollup for MS .NET Framework) please see the footnote labelled "IMPORTANT EDIT as of April 2020" in the instructions in m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours that discusses this particular update. There is a link in that footnote to greenhillmainiac's instructions <here> in the MSFN Vista board for applying the required trust certificates in the MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer certificate file that must be installed before KB4014984.

KB2434419 (Windows Essentials Live) is no longer available for download from the Microsoft Update Catalog and the Windows Essentials 2012 suite reached end of support on 10-Jan-2017. See the June 2016 Guardian article Microsoft is Killing Off Windows Live Mail – What Should I Do? for more insformation. DIPAKMODHA's Nov 2018 thread windows live mail 2011 vista cannot create an email in the MS Answers Vista board also includes some hints about using Vista's built-in Windows Mail program for accessing mail on the Windows Live (now Outlook.com) mail server. I've never used Windows Essentials on my Vista machine so you might want to post in the Windows Essentials board of the MS Answers forum if you believe that installation of KB2434419 is still supported on Vista SP2.

When you say the remaining updates will not install, do you mean that the .msu installers throw a "The update is not applicable to your computer..." error, or are they failing to install when you run a manual Windows Update? If your Vista SP2 OS was already patched to 11-Apr-2017 then most of these older security updates have likely been superseded (replaced) by newer updates that are already installed on your computer, and the Windows Update Standalone Installer will prevent installation of the .msu installer because they are no longer required.

Hi mlynch02:

Further to your update problem with KB2434419 (Windows Essentials Live), I don't know if this will help but I did a bit more searching in the Windows Essentials forum, and if your Vista Ultimate machine has a previous version of Windows Essentials Live installed there are older threads in that forum suggesting that you can either a) hide the KB2434419 update if you don't want to use Windows Essential Live (see the How-To Geek article Disable or Hide Optional Updates on Windows Vista) or b) uninstall and remove all traces of the older version first. I don't know if option b) to uninstall all traces of previous versions would still stop the KB2434419 update error in 2020, but if some of your other update failures are associated with unsupported Windows Essentials Live programs then this might prevent those update errors as well.

Here are a few sample threads:

I tried but I am a Novice at this.
I will attach the Error Message I received and a Snip.
I placed the New Cert on my Desktop.
I also copied and pasted it to a Desktop Folder called New Folder.
I do not understand how to correctly address the cmd prompt to find the Cert and or the New Folder with the cert in it.
SORRY, I JUST TRIED TO ATTACH THE DESKTOP CERT AND NEW FOLDER HOWEVER, THE ATTACH FILES BUTTON DOES NOT WORK!

I am trying to Attach files that I spoke of before, hopefully the Attach files button will work.
Now, the Preview button and the Attach button refuse to work.
I will try and transport the items I believe might help you to help me to another PC and send them to you.
I appreciate your help and patience.

Here are the Attachments I thought might help.
Most important is I am a Novice at this and addressing the CMD to import the Certificate has me stymied.
I have attached a Snip on my latest addressing attempt which failed.

YIKES!

I noticed the Canadian Flag.

I have traveled in most Provinces / Territories with the exception of the Maritimes.
The Yukon was / is my favorite.
The Midnight Sun Hotel Bar in Dawson City in particular.
It's no longer in business but WOW, what great beer, Yukon Gold on draft, brewed in White Horse.
Being a butt head, I had to visit and tour the Brewery.
But I digress, sorry.Capture - Desktop Icons.JPGCapture - Snip.JPG

Hi mlynch02:

..and it's our July 1st national holiday Canada Day today, to boot!

Your error message says "The system cannot find the path specified". If you created a folder called "New Folder" on your desktop and saved the MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer file in that folder then the path is actually something like C:\Users\<yourusername>\Desktop\New Folder\MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer. If you right-click on the MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer file and choose Properties, the Location field on the General tab should show you the correct path to the file.

MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011_cer Properties Location 01 Jul 2020.png

Try moving the MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer certificate file into the root directory of your C:\ drive (e.g. so it is located at C:\MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer) and then try running the command certutil -addstore "Root" "C:\MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer" (don't forget to add the ".cer" extension to the filename) from an elevated command prompt.

Novices could simply hide the .NET 4.x update, which is more than 3 years old and unlikely to provide much additional security in 2020. I see Imacri has posted at MSFN to seek assistance, which is commendable.

I would run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt (especially if you reinstalled Vista from an ancient factory image that is quite possibly corrupt). You might also try not selecting the rollup for .NET Framework for installation, since it has clearly become a problem these days, and perhaps also the one that is Recommended rather than Important.

Edit: Screenshot in post #1 suggests that you probably restored from a January 2008 factory image. If sfc /scannow finds corrupt files that cannot be fixed, then I would suggest a clean install of Vista. A “vista ISO download” is available at this forum.

I am run sfc /scannow right now from an elevated command prompt.
The prior two times I have run it, it took quite some time.
I will report the results.

I will proceed to run each Update separately and report the results.
The past two times I have done this, none of the Updates installed.

I followed the suggestion(s) however, all the attempts to install the non hidden Updates failed.
SFC states it found problems and fixed them all. The other two times I ran it, it said the same thing.
Just a side note, Vista has balloned to over 212GB's since I started this install, beginning with a new Disk Drive, YIKES!

How large might Vista Ultimate / MS Office be, assuming every available Update?

I will add New Folder (2) to this Thread documenting what Vista saw after each attempt to install the five Updates.

Attach files still does not work so I must copy, paste, transport, etc.
