Solved Vista won't boot, System restore/Startup repair can't fix

The machine starts to boot normally, but stays on the green scrolling bar loading splash screen window. It doesn't freeze, it just never moves on from that screen. It will not load in safe mode or last known good config either. I've run hardware diags and they all pass with flying colors.

Startup Repair listed the following as the problem details but was unable to fix problem.

Problem Event Name:Startup repairV2

Problem Signature 01: AutoFailure

Prob Sig 02: 6.0.6001.18000.6.0.6001.18000

Prob Sig 03: 6

Prob Sig 04: 786444

Prob Sig 05: Unknown

Prob Sig 06: NoRootCause

Prob Sig 07: 0

Prob Sig 08: 2

Prob Sig 09: WrpRepair

Prob Sig 10: 87

Is there anything else I can try besides reloading Vista onto the laptop? Thanks.

Hi welcome to the forum. Sorry you have problems.
A couple of questions first I'm afraid.
Have you had any heavy downloads lately?
Or computer gaming?
How much memory do you have ib the computer?
What, if anything were you doing before it went wrong?
Thank you

Does it otherwise swith on & off OK?

Hi kesume. :)

Most recent downloads were Microsoft updates I ran on it a couple weeks ago.
We don't game with the machine because it is a work machine.
It has 4gb ram.
It switches on and off just fine other than getting stuck at the splash screen.
The user had it on in the office the day before, just doing his work (word, excel, outlook, accounting software via citrix, etc.) and it seemed to be working fine he says.

It behaves the same in or out of the doc with or without any external devices plugged into it. It seems as though vista is corrupted some how.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,
If you haven't done this could you try it please. I know sounds a little strange!

First:- Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices .
We do not need all the accessories, to test the computer!

Disconnect the power adaptor (AC unit), remove the battery, then ‘Press and Hold’ the power button for at least 30 seconds.

Reconnect the AC power adaptor unit (but not the battery), Press the Powerbutton, see if it boots & opens.

If you are still having problems , if you are able, could you perform a clean boot?
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
Hope this helps.
Thank you.

OK, so I can't try clean boot because the computer never gets past the splash screen.

When I try to boot into safe mode, it stops at loading drivers, crcdisk.sys is the last file it lists as loaded.

No I can't do that, because it won't boot into windows. I can hit F8 and bring up the Advanced Boot options and select safe mode from there, however, it only gets so far in loading in safe mode and stops where it says, "Loading Windows Files, Please wait..." and it has all of the system files that it has been loading scrolling up on the screen, and the last one it loads is crcdisk.sys.

Is there a way to get to the recovery console so I can run SFC or something? Do you think that would even help?

Thanks again! :)

Hmm, OK, I tried safe mode cmd prompt, but it still stops at crcdisk.sys.

The OS disk I have came from Fujitsu and they do not have the option on there to go to cmd prompt or console when booting from it. :(

What should I try next?

My Computer

Have you got any system restore discs?
Original cd's for the computer? Or the OEM disc, what does it allow you to do? What options does it give?
In F8, what options does it give you other than safe mode?
Have you managed to back up your data?

I don't know if it will run chkdsk, I can't find a way to get to a cmd prompt.

Can you get a command prompt if in Safe Mode?
Thank you.

In the Advanced Boot Options screenshot.
It gives you an option to go to Safe Mode with Command Prompt!
Have you tried this?
