Vista won't play battlefield 2 HELP!

Asus

New Member
I can't get it to work. I tried running as administrator and no luck. I have a Asus G2 series gaming laptop - OS Vista Home premium 32 bit.

The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop.

Help would be great. I tried putting my computer in a 800x600 resolustion and still didn't start it.

Help??

Since there is no specs posted, I gotta ask... do you know for a fact if your laptop meets or surpass the minimum and/or recommended hardware requirements?

Yes it does. Here are the specs on my laptop:

2.2 ghz Intel core2 Duo
Nvidia 8600M GT 256 MB
Windowa Vista home premium 32 bit
somewhere around 200 BG hard drive, maybe more.

It far surpasses what the game calls for, but yet it won't play it???

I got a suggestion from another fella who said I should go to Nvidias website and download their latest driver? Should I? Or can this hurt my computer?

This is the latest driver release for my card and computer:
GeForce Release 179

That looks about right doesn't it? I never like messing with my computer like that but if it will help then it will.

PS: My computer was built in October 2007.

Did you try running it in xp compatibility mode?

Yes I got 2 GB of ram, video I have no idea. I do know that my computer runs at a refresh rate of 62 and the game runs at 60?

And how do I run it in XP compatability mode?

My Computer

when BF2 boots up it starts at a resolution of 800x600 (your current res wont affect this) @ 60hz anything trying to prevent it doing so like refreshforce or anything that forces a custom resolution or a monitor that cannot display at 60hz will cause that problem

loads had problems in the past mate there are plenty of workarounds about just google it :D

your current settings should be fine res/frquency , but BF2 must be able to change them in order to start up , look at this guide

TweakGuides.com - Battlefield 2 Tweak Guide

Launching/Loading Issues:
The most common problem with BF2 is that the game crashes to desktop or goes to a black screen when you first launch it. The reason for this is either incompatible hardware (make sure you meet all the minimum specs), or more usually the fact that you're not running at the default Windows XP refresh rate (60Hz). By default the game tries to launch at 800x600@60Hz initially, so your system must be able to run that same resolution and refresh rate, otherwise the game will abort. If you are using any refresh rate override program/method, disable it (e.g. if you're using Refresh Force, click the 'Restore Original Settings' button and apply). Alternatively, see the Advanced Tweaking section of the guide for details on how to set a different startup resolution, in case your graphics card/monitor simply cannot do 800x600@60Hz resolution. Once you've got the game running, you can then change the resolution to suit your taste in the in-game settings, and importantly you can select a higher refresh rate. Then you can reapply any refresh rate override and the game will launch without any problems. To set a non-standard resolution see the Advanced Tweaking section.

Hmm, well.... I looked up where I did before under "Display Setting" and "advanced settings" under "Monitor" and it did not give me any options to change it. Is it possible that the gam may be bad? My computer play the old Sim City 4 with no problems (except occasional freezing) so I don't know why a newer "hipper" game won't go? I have never changed any of my monitor settings, and when I launch sim City 4 it automaticaly changes to a different screen size (800x600).

Should I just return the hardware and try again with a new one??? Maybe somehow it got corupted when I tried to install it on our other computer and it didn't work. The other Computer is a brand new Dell 121B - Intel I7 - 4Gb DDR3 - 500 GB hard drive and the best Nvidia. Its a 64 bit though. And that computer flipped out when I installed the game! I had to restore it because it did NOT like that game, wouldn't freakin start!

So, take the game back to the store and try again??

My Computer

have you read the guide? have you looked up the advanced tweaking section for info on how to set a differant startup resolution? I mean the games startupres not your monitors , thats not the issue

Mate, I would say no. Since it installed fine, then there's nothing wrong with the media. The problem lies with your laptops configuration. The fact that Simcity4 defaults to 800x600 as well suggests it's a driver issue.

If you haven't already done so, I would highly suggest updating to the latest drivers. It won't hurt your Laptop.

I just installed BF2 again to test it and it works fine, even on x64. It doesn't require compatibility mode or being run as admin.

If you get into the game, the resolution settings in BF2 are found under OPTIONS > VIDEO > Display mode

do not know if this will help or not it is from the readme from bf2

- CHANGING DISPLAY MODE
Occasionally on some video cards you may be allowed to set the
display mode to one not supported by your computer. This will result
in a black screen being shown. To remedy this use the Windows
Explorer to find and delete the directory:
\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\
This will reset your game to the default settings. You can
now start the game, retrieve or create a new profile, and re-adjust
the settings using the Menu as normal.
also you might check around i remember reading a while back that bf2 does not support
some laptop video chipsets (ill look around and see if i can find the info)

Just a suggestion. Reset your video card to default values and attempt to run the game. I know Vista and Silent Hunter 4 will not run if the video card is set up and tweaked. Resetting the card to defaults allows the game to run. After running it once, I can go in and reset my video card to the tweaks I had. The game runs fine from then on. Also, check to see what you have your sound set up for. Reduce this. I know COD WaW will not run for some if the sound is set at or higher than 44100hz or something like that.

go to control panel -> sound
change your speakers properties to 16bit, 44100Hz (cd Quality)"

I believe both games are from the same developer and pehaps the same problem.
