Windows 7 public beta is available now

As Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer promised at CES 2009 during his preshow keynote, the Windows 7 beta is now available to the public for download. It is only available to the first 2.5 million people who download it, so make sure to get your hands on it as soon as you can! The beta is available in English (32-bit and 64-bit), German (32-bit and 64-bit), Japanese (32-bit and 64-bit), Arabic (32-bit and 64-bit), and Hindi (32-bit). Once you have the .iso image downloaded, I recommend you use IMGBurn to burn it to a DVD. The beta supports clean installs and Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 upgrades. You can only install the Ultimate edition. You should receive a beta key by e-mail sometime after you download the build. Microsoft gives the following minimum hardware recommendations for the Windows 7 Beta (and notes that they can change before the final):
  • Processor: 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
  • Memory: 1 GB of system memory
  • Hard drive: 16 GB of available disk space
  • Video card: Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128MB memory (in order to enable Aero theme)
  • Drive: DVD-R/W drive
Full Story: Windows 7 public beta is available now

I have it installed but would rather uninstall it now, does this mean i will have to reinstall vista or what?

Why uninstall so soon? Issues?

At around 2.7 gig's, I was glad enough to let a friend, with a Hyper-Fast ISP, download it for me and even burn it to a DVD.:p
It came with a "Patch" that activated it. No big deal. No numbers to fuss around with.

Install the program, then run the patch and the job was done.:D

In its crippled form, it pretty much wets the bed!!! Gads, I hate betas.

Hi bossmayank,

to your 3 questions, 3 answers - Yes, Yes and Yes.

I am typing this from it now. Triple booting my system.

No extra drivers required for me - not even for the ethernet or graphics cards.

Hi Guimonster,

If you formatted Vista when you installed 7 , yes you will need to reinstall Vista.

If you had Vista installed in the normal way on one partition, then installed 7 on another and did not format the Vista partition, you should not need to.

I like Vista too - so I have both installed - but will probably be in 7 nearly all the time.

Hope it helps

From the OP, there is a limit. But that's cool. I found another link from Microsoft that is a direct download. I would like to share but I don't think that allowed on some forums. Let me know.

MP3 files
When MP3 files are added (either manually or automatically) to either the Windows Media Player or the Windows Media Center library, or if the file metadata is edited with Windows Explorer, several seconds of audio data may be permanently removed from the start of the file. This issue occurs when files contain thumbnails or other metadata of significant size before importing or editing them. To avoid this, take the following steps:

To protect your MP3 files

1. Before you install this Beta release, back up all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer, including those on removable media or network shares.
2. Install the Beta release of Windows 7; then install this update (KB961367).

If you do not want to install the update, you can avoid this issue by setting all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer to read-only before starting either Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center or before editing MP3 metadata with Windows Explorer. To do this, in Windows Explorer, find the files, right-click them, click the General tab, and then select the Read-only check box. Once you have installed the update, you can safely reset the read/write status of your MP3 files to your preference.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking I might do. Despite the fact that Windows 7 looks good. I'd much rather wait until all kinks are sorted out before I install it onto my system.

Mine works fine as well. I have the 64-bit version set up triple-boot with Vista 64 and
XP 64. The only message I got was that my Brother HL-5170DN laser printer wouldn't work, but it does! Win7 just like Vista. I did the upgrade install. I ghosted my Vista installation to another partition and then ran the upgrade. A few tricks with VistaBoot Pro 3.3 and I'm up and running. I use Firefox and Thunderbird, so I have not tried MSIE 8 yet. My CPI is 4.4 with Win7 and 4.3 with Vista.

I did a clean install on another computer that is also working well. It triple-boots with
2 setups of XP home 32 bit.

Windows 7 will set up as a dual boot if a separate partition is made available and the vista computer is booted from the Win7 iso DVD. This approach worked great with OS vista Home Premium X64.:geek:

Yeah I tried to download it but a message was posted saying its in the process of adding more servers and to wait for the post Beta. One question...is it possible to set windows 7 as a dual boot with vista?
