Windows 7 public beta is available now

As Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer promised at CES 2009 during his preshow keynote, the Windows 7 beta is now available to the public for download. It is only available to the first 2.5 million people who download it, so make sure to get your hands on it as soon as you can! The beta is available in English (32-bit and 64-bit), German (32-bit and 64-bit), Japanese (32-bit and 64-bit), Arabic (32-bit and 64-bit), and Hindi (32-bit). Once you have the .iso image downloaded, I recommend you use IMGBurn to burn it to a DVD. The beta supports clean installs and Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 upgrades. You can only install the Ultimate edition. You should receive a beta key by e-mail sometime after you download the build. Microsoft gives the following minimum hardware recommendations for the Windows 7 Beta (and notes that they can change before the final):
  • Processor: 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
  • Memory: 1 GB of system memory
  • Hard drive: 16 GB of available disk space
  • Video card: Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128MB memory (in order to enable Aero theme)
  • Drive: DVD-R/W drive
Full Story: Windows 7 public beta is available now

Just use Vista to partition it before you install.

Please explain. I am not familiar with Vista or Windows 7.

Why don't you dual-boot on the desktop. Leave your XP Pro on there. Won't hurt it.
I have 3 computers, I've installed Win7 on 2 of them already. Triple boot on this one with XP Pro 64 and Vista 64. Triple boot on the other one, with 2 copies of XP 32.

How much RAM have you got on that laptop? Think you need about 2 GB

Well I'm assuming you have Vista installed and want to install Windows 7 beside it.
Right click my computer > manage > storage > disk management
Right click your current partitoin > shrink volume
Once that is done, create a new one for Windows 7 beta
Restart, boot off the Windows 7 beta dvd, and install Windows 7 on the new partition.

Want to leave my Desktop PC alone. Forget I even have a Desktop... I want to know WHY i can't shrink my C: Drive Volume on my laptop more than 10GB.

4GB Ram on Laptop

Tried the 1st link bud. followed the steps and no luck. Might try again when i get home from work (i brought my laptop to work today to mess with it)

Ugh - F-it I am done!

Did this:

Making Shrink Volume Work
To absolutely ensure that you can shrink the volume, you should disable as many of the system files as you can, at least temporarily. Here's the list of steps:

  1. Run the Disk Cleanup Wizard, making sure to remove the hibernation file and all restore points.
  2. Disable System Restore
  3. Disable the pagefile ( Open up System in Control Panel, then Advanced System Settings \ Advanced \ Performance \ Advanced \ Change \ No Paging File.
  4. In the same Advanced Settings, go to Startup and Recovery \ Settings and then change the Write debugging information drop-down to "None" to disable the kernel memory dump.
  5. Disable Hibernation mode in your power options \ advanced power options screen.
  6. Reboot the machine, and then delete your c:\pagefile.sys file, following these instructions if you are having issues.
Then downloaded these two:

  1. Power Defragmenter (GUI interface for sysinternals contig)
  2. Auslogics Disk Defrag
Ran them and restarted PC

NO LUCK! :(

Wow, that's lucky - you usually need to do one after resizing your Vista partition with Gparted.

You installed 7 straight after creating the partition ?

You didn't try to boot into Vista before that ?

I installed 7 after I created the partition/formatted the partition.
After installed 7 i booted to Vista by accident first...... So it took a bit (ran diskcheck, ect) and went to the Vista desktop... After it went to the desktop I restarted the laptop and booted from 7 and it said starting.... blah blah.. create username/password.........ect and then i was in.

good even i had to run a start up repair after a triple boot :D

Hmmm... Just lucky i guess.. i dunno.
