Windows Resource Protetion Issue

Thank you so much. I think this would have been much more stressful if I had to have done this by myself. Just one quick question. Can I jump to sp2 from online download or do I have to do all the updates in windows update? (cause I just looked and it has 112 updates and not one of them was to sp2)

My Computer

Each SP contains all of the prior updates, except the few that came out before the SP. Each SP contains the prior SP and updates, except for the last few. Update to the current SP. Leave your Windows update on and you will receive any updates, if any that you are missing.

Thank you so much again - I have gone through the sp and update stage and now I am reinstalling panda for protection. Should I keep a version of malwarebytes on my desktop? After the routine protection I'm going to sort put the image.

My Computer

First
Go to computer icon on desktop.
Right click
properties
Do you see Vista SP2?
If yes,
Download your anti virus, I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials.
Download Malwrebytes
Download Winpatrol A pseudo Anti Virus with many other great features.

That image is going to be used to reinstall if necessary. So put it the way you want it, then make the image.

Me bad. Go back to the paage that you saw SP2. Lower right, do you see genuine MS prodcut?

Yea the bluey thing means that you are properly activated. If it were not there in 30 days you would slowly begin to lose function. You did a good job.

Phew. That's a relief to hear that. Just had a slight scare a moment too as MSE froze everything up and popped an error message saying it couldn't update but reran it and it appears to be cooperating

If bluey is there, sp2 is there. You did it right.
Just slowly install programs, settings, and anything else that you want. Then put an image on an external hard drive. Then whenever you have a big problem that cant be solved, just use the image.
You may also want to update that image once in a while. If you install a new program, update the image. I think you get what I mean.

Yeah I see how that would be a good idea. What size is the image going to be?(wondering if I will need to get myself some more discs or a small harddrive. And perhaps from now on I should back up files too. Speaking of which, does the image register files or just core programs?

And one more question before I think I'm done - I don't seem to have my top shortcut bar. How do I retrieve that?

External hard drive is best. You are backing up your entire hard drive.
Dont use Discs. Dont put on your internal hard drive. Spend 100 bucks on and External hard drive if you dont have one.
Yes BACK UP Your stuff weekly on a large finger drive. The image is real emergency only.

Short cut bar, do you have a Dell?

Hey, if it were not for people like you neediing help, it would be pretty boring just sitting in front of the computer.

All kidding aside, we are all volunteers that love computers and to help others.

And you are very welcome.

After you have finished with the updates, Mainly SP2 then open an administrator command prompt and type compcln.exe and then Y to confirm
This gets rid of the sp installers

Hey its not your fault, you helped equally as much i think - trying hard to help fix the machine in every way rather than just conceeding. Its just a shame that the fixes werent taking hold and eventually the computer wouldnt cooperate. It made me realise that the working condition i got it to was really just a pretend-fixed state with a much bigger problem lurking, which if it hadnt have bugged me enough to seek help, i probably would have just left it.

I thank everyone who tried helping, you two especially. You both deserve the rep you receive and to mirror what Rich said, if it wasnt for people like you guys, people like me would be lost.

@ilikefree - What does that do?

--------------------------------

Update for you all: My computer is running well again, just like it was when first brought. Slowly returning the programs i once had on there, and trying to find the software for my printer and graphics tablet, installed flash player (man that took a long time) and just need a few more things. Once that is done (and while its being done) i am looking for a external drive so tht i can make the image (but that will probably have to wait til monday)

Again thank you all :)
