Windows Update Error - kb955430

Hi, Tried the two MS 'fixes' - same outcome with KB955430 manual install, normal mode.

I've attached zipped Windows Update.log.

Thanks!

(Oh, the MS escalation support engineer is enquiring (finally) about that folder it accesses of the technical geniuses at MS. Only took 10+ email exchanges to get there, & I told them about it from day 1).

Try the resolution 2 mentioned in this link

:)

========== Last 10 Event Log Errors ==========

Error reading Event Logs: The Event Service is not operating properly or the Event Logs are corrupt!

< End of report >
Although Eventlog service is working.

SRV - [2008/01/21 03:23:49 | 01,013,760 | ---- | M] (Microsoft Corporation) -- C:\Windows\System32\wevtsvc.dll -- (Eventlog [Auto | Running])
Question relate to this:Can you open manually event viewer?Does command :
Start>>Search>>eventvwr.msc workin? If yes can you open and read all messages in Application,System and Security sections?

My Computer

Hi, yes, I can read all 3 logs...

Interesting- should have bothered to look before:
The Windows update could not be installed because of an error: 2147943458 "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "E:\My Downloads\Windows6.0-KB955430-x86 - will not install.msu" ")

OR

The Windows update "Update for Windows (KB955430)" could not be installed because of an error: 2149842953 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "E:\My Downloads\Windows6.0-KB955430-x86 - will not install.msu" ")

- there seem to be 2 different types of reports.
More:
Up 'til now I've had automatic updates turned off.
I just tried turning that on..

the effect on trying to install KB955430 is that it now reports

Installer encountered an error 0x80240009

I turned it off again, but still get the error msg.

I did get that once after apppying the first 'FIX' you suggested and trying the KB955430 update.

I suspect it's associated with Windows thinking there's a pending update.. confirmed by attempting to install an optional update- which fails. I probably need to restart after a failed attempt at KB955430...

1.Delete all *.xml files in C:\Winodws\WinSxS folder

Make sure you don't have any unnecessary phrases in HKLM\Components
details:http://www.vistax64.com/872713-post6.html

2.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type:

SC STOP Eventlog
SC STOP Winmgmt
RD /S C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs
RD /S C:\Windows\System32\wbem\repository
SC START Winmgmt
SC START Eventlog

+restart
3.If still no help try my hotfix for Windows Installer >http://www.vistax64.com/attachments...224-windows-installer-program-corrupt-msi.zip
+restart

My Computer

Hi, no success.

Done all you suggest:
One file cleanup.xml found - had to set to delete on boot.

SC STOP Eventlog
SC STOP Winmgmt

failed in normal mode, had to go to Safe Mode.

HKLM\Components was ok.

However I now find that eventvwr.msc => 'the event log service is not running'
& trying to start it via services.msc => 'file not found'.

Am trying SFC /SCANNOW again....

Hi, Ok, fixed the event log..

Recreated
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs
as an empty folderThen started the service.
(Actually starting the service had => 'Cannot find the path specified'.
I hadn't read the message properly).

2.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type:
This means to elevate previlliges you have right click on this file as admin if you do that in normal mode -in safe mode it is unnecessary because UAC don't work in safe mode and administrators at once have full access.

Import fix for event log which I attached below+restart. After importing & restart make another log from VistaInfoTool (select all) http://www.vistax64.com/attachments...taforums-sysinfo-tool-vistaforums-sysinfo.exe

Hi, thanks again.. will try that..
just to clarify why I went to safe mode.. in normal mode the command was refused.
see attached screenshots from normal mode.

As you will see, I did run it as admin (and logged in as admin) - and by the way I have UAC turned off.

This command work on this service only it stop also services which depence from Event Log -here Task Scheduler- yes I should estimate it -neverless after restart Task Scheduler should work again.Make sure Task Schedule service is working after restart. If not - import attached fix to registry +restart because you can't change setting for Task Scheduler in services.msc.Next attache log from VistaInfoTool

Hi Flavius,

1. Attached the sysinfo report
2. Task scheduler service is running ok
3. Couldn't merge eventlog.reg - in both normal and safe mode it reported reg keys in use by system or other process.

My friends here advise they know of no one with a Vista SP1 PC - I'm still hoping to get a copy of the folder KB955430 is stuck reading. I don't even know what should be in it..

Thanks again.

I think event log service work fine now- tools report events although nothing special in that.I think you should try again install SP2 standalone version -if still no success you have to gain full Vista DVD to make Repair Install with updating

My Computer

"If you have Vista SP1, which you installed (rather than the manufacturer) I'd be really grateful if you could send me a copy of the content of that folder..
C:\Windows\servicing\Version\6.0.6001.18000" please...!!

I found you're trying find help on other forums also for example MS Technet and other.CheckSur don't report any missing in any folder or key.Neverless if you have right and checkSur mistake and realy something missing you have to reconstruct it but it is not easy -includes in this folders depends on system version, platform and update status.Becuase you used Process Monitor to diagnose, pack the whole log and upload on
speedyshare.com

EDIT
I found solution - I think:http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t691172.html

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on this file as admin)
and type

slmgr -rearm

and wait about 1 minute until you receive a message dialog next restart computer
and install SP2 standalone version
First make what I wrote under EDIT -if it also fail upload Process Monitor log

Hi, I have read that post before.. so now I've tried that, still no joy, alas.

Nothing more from MS yet.

I've attached a PM log, started just before I attempted SP2 after a restart, so it's big. About 27Mb, expands to 531Mb, native PM format. Sorry.

Maybe there's something else besides the folder being read that may give a clue..

At
16:53:29.5210460
CreateFile C:\Windows\servicinq\Version\6.0.6002.18005 NAME NOT FOUND
CreateFile C:\Windows\servicinq\Version\6.0.6002.18005 NAME NOT FOUND
is interesting- different to the folder read, and not present.
That is AFTER creating C:\Windows\servicing\version.
which appears to be more interesting- this hotfix should apparently create the folder..
However, at
16:53:29.5457963 it reads the folder (6.0.6001.18000)- created 21/01/2008
At
16:53:29.5466225 seems to be the first 'NO MORE FILES' report.

You should be able to download the log from
PM Logfile -stack traces.7z - DivShare
(Tried speedy share, seemed to complete uploadind, then was waiting for a URL...)

Thanks again!

He's already tried -see previous posts -in post 13 checksur.log is attached - no errors reported.

As far I know error what you have really related to genuine issue

Answering for your question

CreateFile C:\Windows\servicinq\Version\6.0.6002.18005 NAME NOT FOUND
CreateFile C:\Windows\servicinq\Version\6.0.6002.18005 NAME NOT FOUND
This folder is created when SP2 is installed, after SP2 installing is removed folder
C:\Windows\Servicing\Version\6.0.6001.18000 <-in this folder is only one file: x86_installed file and nothing more.I really doubt is going on about any missing file or key -checksur usually report these kind of errors and your log is empty.Remeber only a few percent alerts reported by Process Monitor are true - mostly are false alerts.Try only one thing but I really doubt it help.PM reported you don't have insufficient permissions to one folder and one key - I surmise there are also false alerts neverless try it.Don't touch any system components and components key and don't rearm system any more.If below also fail only MS Support can help you.

1.Download SetACL Download SetACL: Windows ACL manipulation from SourceForge.net
extract SetACL.exe and place it in C:\Windows\System32
2.Download files which I attached to post and place them directly on C:
3.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type:

first command:

setacl -on "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WBEM\CIMOM" -ot reg -rec yes -actn restore -bckp "C:\l1.txt"

and second:

setacl -on "C:\Windows\tracing" -ot file -rec cont_obj -actn restore -bckp "C:\l2.txt"

Next restart and try install SP2 standalone version. As said before if it also fail for you only leave MS Support

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Solved.

The solution: A bit of reverse logic.

Process Monitor shows KB955430 apparently looking for more files in
C:\Windows\Servicing\Version\6.0.6001.18000.

Curiously something MS support said about not having that folder present gave me the clue.
(I don't know if they were referring to an SP1 or SP2 machine).

How to fix this.
Delete that folder. (It has to be done during boot, so you need a utility to do that).

Then, restart, launch KB955430 - hey presto - success.

And then install SP2.

So: the back story:

When (some) manufacturers pre-install SP1, this folder is left.
KB955430 has a bug. If it sees that folder it goes into an infinite loop.

Solution:
a. Tell MS- get them to update the hotfix.
b. Tell the manufacturers.
c. Advertise this solution.

Thanks so much for all your help, I really appreciate it... best yet. :)
