With your help...

Sheer obstinacy... and a pretty good idea there was something wrong more than with just my Windows.

Now, if this affects everyone with a similarly pre-installed configuration, think of the implications.. However, I'm surprised there are relatively few reports. I've seen maybe 20 people reporting this.. is SP2 available to everyone yet by automatic update? I never saw it offered..

MS solutions I've seen offered to people:

Hide the update
Reinstall
Sorry, no solution
A DVD so you can do an update repair.

And as a one-time software engineer, I hate infinite loops! ;)

Solved.

The solution: A bit of reverse logic.

Process Monitor shows KB955430 apparently looking for more files in
C:\Windows\Servicing\Version\6.0.6001.18000.

Curiously something MS support said about not having that folder present gave me the clue.
(I don't know if they were referring to an SP1 or SP2 machine).

How to fix this.
Delete that folder. (It has to be done during boot, so you need a utility to do that).

Then, restart, launch KB955430 - hey presto - success.

And then install SP2.

So: the back story:

When (some) manufacturers pre-install SP1, this folder is left.
KB955430 has a bug. If it sees that folder it goes into an infinite loop.

Solution:
a. Tell MS- get them to update the hotfix.
b. Tell the manufacturers.
c. Advertise this solution.

Thanks so much for all your help, I really appreciate it... best yet. :)

Whast utility did you use ? are there others?

To delete locked files on reboot:

Bootdeleter will work (freeware)
Software by Joseph Cox
- adds a context menu entry.

or search for
'delete on boot'
'delete locked files'

for example may show alternatives such as GiPo@Utilities (not free).

Of course, you could also boot from a suitable boot CD.
