Windows Vista laptop not connecting to XP machines. Other vista computers are fine...

Hi,

I have a couple of Windows XP computers and a couple of Vista computers. I share files, printers etc. and it all runs great.

One of the family has been away, and now they have come back their laptop won't connect to the XP computers. It connects to the Vista (and Win7) computers just fine.

It must be something wrong with the laptop, as my other Vista/Win7 computers connect fine to the XP ones perfectly.
I have tried disabling firewalls.

The error I get is:
Windows Cannot Access \\COMPNAME

If I click diagnose I get:
"COMPNAME" is not a valid hostname

The laptop is running Windows Vista Home 32bit with SP1, using it's wireless connection. One of the XP machines is wireless, the other is wired and both are XP Pro 32bit with SP3.

Can anybody help me out please?
Many thanks...

Re: Windows Vista laptop not connecting to XP machines. Other vista computers are fin

I have a similar issue with my new Vista 64 Home Premium HP Laptop as well
Actually I can see the share folders from the XP (to the laptop) but I get a access error when vista trys to connects to the XP Desktop.

It could be norton but it seems unlikely...as the XP connect ok to the Vista Laptop

after some googles and so forth I have not found a soultion yet

It seems very likely these are Firewall related issues. I suggest that you disable the firewalls on the computers at fault and then see if you can share the files and folders on each machine. Remembering to switch the Firewall back on after you've checked this worked or not. I had a similar issue with Kaspersky refer to:~ http://www.vistax64.com/system-security/211352-kaspersky-blocks-my-network.html

You must make sure that each computer has access to the other computers via ip! ip addresses need to be inputed and situated in the subnetworks. This gives the computers access to each other.

DO NOT MAKE YOUR HOME NETWORK A TRUSTED NETWORK!
The reason for this is, that if anyone is clever enough to get onto your network (which they can) they can access everything you have shared on the network...

Hope this serves your problem....
