Internet Explorer 8 released, progress unmistakable

The final build of Internet Explorer 8 has been released in 25 languages. You can also grab the download directly from these links: Windows XP 32-bit (16.1 MB), Windows XP 64-bit (32.3 MB), Windows Server 2003 32-bit (16.0 MB), Windows Server 2003 64-bit (32.3 MB), Windows Vista 32-bit (13.2 MB), Windows Vista 64-bit (24.3 MB), Windows Server 2008 32-bit (13.2 MB), and Windows Server 2008 64-bit (24.3 MB).

The public Windows 7 beta is not being updated, and although Microsoft released an update for IE8 for Windows 7 in February, the next update is not likely to arrive until the Windows 7 Release Candidate next month. For everyone else, in the coming weeks Microsoft will put IE8 out as an optional download on Windows Update and then later roll it out to users via Automatic Updates. A quick note to all the IT administrators out there reading this post: the IE8 blocker toolkit is already available, so make sure you get acquainted with it if you're planning on avoiding IE8 when it's released via Microsoft's update channels.

Just finished dowloading IE8 64bit. No problem with their servers as it took 2 minutes @ 124kbs. Installation was quick...no hiccups. Started it up and I'll say that it is quick with loading pages. We'll see how it goes. I'm still going to stay with Firefox 3.0.7 as my default...

I have IE8 RC1 now. Can I just install the RTM over the top of that? What's the best way to do this? I know this is a dumb question. I know I CAN....but is it just the same anyway? Should I even worry about it? Have there even been any changes since RC1?

Yes. My personal recommendation for anything like this is always to uninstall, install final. Installing overtop is a supported scenario in this case (it isn't always), so yes it is the same. No, you shouldn't worry about it. Yes, there have been changes since RC1.

Thanks for the reply. So go into "installed updates" and do it from there right. Because you can't uninstall IE from Vista. (as far as I know)

Hi,
I have installed IE8 it's faster than IE7 and I have a problem to open sites within a site, for example I am unable to switch to sevenforums from vistax64. I have set the Protected Mode to Off. TIA.

Have you tried putting the site in Compatibility Mode Brummy.?

Hmmm....Correct me if I'm wrong, but if IE detects a webpage requireing Compatibility Mode it will "automatically" dsiplay the button?

If it does it "automatically" then why do you have the option to put the button there? (which I can't figure out how to remove) It's there so you can push it but if it's automatic....why have it there?

Because nothing is perfect, and if the detection doesn't work as the user would like, they can change it.

I just played with the button so...

Right click the menu bar and make sure the "Compatibility View Button" has a check mark next to it. Now If the buttom is showing like it is here...

Then right clicking the menu bar and removing the check mark will also remove the Compatibility button.

If on the other hand, the Compatibility button doesn't show, even though there is still a check mark next to it in the menu bar, removing the check mark will have no effect.

In short, the compatibility button will only show when a compatibility exists between IE8 and an incompatible web page. At least from what I just tried.

Again, this goes the the auto pop up theory I was talking about.

I'm dying to install IE8 to see how it works.
I've always been afraid to load beta products.
I can't wait for windows 7. I hope to be working by then and be able to pick up another tower. My XP machine is so slow :sleepy:now compared to my vista laptop.

both of my machines are gateways, I have an old dell laptop (win98) and an old tower (win 2000) I use them for MP3 storage :D

I also just downloaded the 32bit for vista from the microsoft site and it was the same size but NOT "application" the type was "FILE" ??????????????????

I have two problems with IE8, I am unable to open up any links or switch form Vistax64 to sevenforums but I can switch from sevenforums to vistax64,the second being unable to open up pages within a web site. I hope someone will come up with a solution in due course and I'll have to wait.

Did you read the link that sygnus21 provided Brummy as that explains how Compatibility Mode works.?

Installing now. Used IE8 on Windows 7 and thought it was very good, so think I'll be using this as default now.

I am having a similar set of problems.

1. The empty space at the top of the browser does not respond to right-clicks, ie. the blank area next to the tabs. So I can't access the menus that are under that.

2. Any link, from any page, on any website, anywhere, even on the stock 'what do you want to do next?' page in IE8 that would open a new tab, will open the tab, say "connecting.." and just hang. Before you mention "compatibility mode" let me stress, this happens on the stock new page screen. This is a major problem.

This is on Vista x64 Ultimate. It happens with 32-bit and 64-bit browsers.
