I'm a gamer considering upgrading vista HoPr 32x to 64x.

My system has 64 bit capabilities (except for the ram which I'd be willing to upgrade) but I'm running in Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I've run many games on it and many, in fact most, run flawlessly. 32 bit itself is working out but for the purpose of getting the most out of my system, I am considering upgrading to Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Would this inhibit any of my 32 bit games? Can 64 bit emulate 32 bit drivers well? Should I just stick with my 32 bit Vista for my 64 bit apps?

My Computer

It all depends on the games you play? Since SP1, most games run just fine; however, every now and then you'll find one that just doesn't get along with 64-bit Vista and you have to jump through a hoop or two to get it to run. Rarely though does a game "just not work".

I will say that 64-bit Vista blew me away as far as gaming goes. Doing a direct comparison with Vista 64-bit, Vista 32-bit and XP SP2, 64-bit ran everything so smoothly it made it seem as if I had a newer graphics card. Of course, 4GB's of RAM helps a lot, but still, modern games just spank. :D

Yea I have to admit I saw an increase with 64 bit over 32 bit, and only had a couple of games not fully work, though they were like DX5 games...so understandable. And every game I play worked and ran great (COD4, CSS, HL2, Assassin's Creed, Crysis etc).

Only using 3GB RAM too, will be upgrading to 4GB after getting paid next week, so can't wait to see the increase then as well :)

You will have to reinstall from scratch. Some games are 64-bit. Most are still 32-bit. No 16-bit programs in 64-bit.

I was signing-up to ask the same question. I have recently bought a new system (Intel Q9550, 4 gigs ram, GeForce 9600GT 1Gb RAM, plus usual bits) and I've put XP (32bit) on and it's ok, but I was questioning the merits of Vista and infact 64bit Vista. I had a quick play with Vista on my partner's laptop and it seems smooth, I liked it actually.

From what I've read here and other places, it seems that most software will run fine on 64bit, where most problems encountered are likely older software, which I have no intentions of using.

It's good to see that CoD 4 works because I've ordered it (and BF2142).

I've heard that same complaint from a lot of guys. So far, to a man, they've all shared one thing in common: a series of MS patches prior to SP1.

I did a clean install of Vista and immediately patched to SP1, avoiding all the incrementals and have not had any crashes or stoppage of play in any of these games. I go for hours on end with each just fine.

I recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate x64, but I'm having problems getting my nVidia drivers going.

When I installed the new drivers, after the system restart, I either a) lock up on restart, or b) my monitors aren't recognized, and they both sit in standby mode.

Everything worked great in XP, I'd hate to have to roll back to this version

Edit: I've been told to completely uninstall my drivers, and restart the system so Windows Update will find its own version of the drivers. Anyone else agree with this?

Getting 64x is a great idea.

I was quite nervous when I got my new laptop with the Vista 64x on it, but was quite happy after realizing that this computers 4 gb of ram and 512 mb video card would be fully utilized, where as before, it would only use about 3.5.

I have had no problems gaming on it so far, and will probably attempt Warhammer Online in a couple of weeks.

Hillean,

The nvidia drivers for the 8800 are 64 bit compatible and will work - My GTS 8800 640mb runs very well in my vista x64 system.

If you are having problems I would download the correct driver ( x64 and correct language ) and unpack / extract it to it's default folder ( ususall c:nvidia/ xxxversion ). When that is done totally uninstall the old drivers - reboot - install the latest drivers - reboot and you should be done.

If that causes problems then try to find an older driver to see if that works - I'm currently using version 175.19 and it's solid. Also check your windows update as they sometimes have videocard drivers / patches to download.

I hope this helps

Chris

I just did a complete system wipe, and reinstalled Vista while on lunchbreak.

After installation and restart, the monitor went black and I just had the mouse cursor, I could move the mouse around but nothing was coming up just yet... still sounded like the hard drive was going so I turned off the monitor and went back to work.

4 more hours until i can check it out :(

Uummmmm.....Sounds odd........Can you only see the cursor - No start orb, icon etc?

It could, of course, still be loading / installing which can take a while first time round.

If you have problems when you get back to it have a look in safe mode and see if you get better results there.

I let it sit for maybe a minute before I had to come back to work, but yes--regular cursor, black screen, could move around just fine. No start orb, icon, background, just black screen plus moveable mouse cursor.

I'll be sure to post back in a few hours when I get home, to see if I'm irate or excited lol

I have Vista 64-bit and a GeForce 9600GT. I updated the drivers from the version on the DVD to the Vista-suggested drivers and CoD 4 did not work correctly, it went dog slow even on lowest graphics settings. I rollbacked to the DVD version and it was fine again.

Which card do you have? I'll find out the version that's on the DVD when I get back to PC and let you know.

BFG - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT OC Graphics Card - BFGR88512GTOCE

That's the exact card I have; I havent even had a chance to load up drivers TO it yet; did a fresh Format, reinstall Vista Ultimate, boots up... black screen (as far as I know) with a cursor.

Before-hand, things would run great, occassional lock-ups, but when I updated the nVidia driver, things went to hell as before-mentioned.

My Computer

Okay, I'm home, and the full reinstall looks to be good.

I have a basic Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 installation, and I'm installing the 26 'updates' it recommends.

After that, it's time to start driver-digging again.
