I'm a gamer considering upgrading vista HoPr 32x to 64x.

The only thing that's made me curious on it is that when I had XP up until this past Sunday, everything ran perfectly fine.

Played Hellgate: London maxed out, Warcraft, even the new Warhammer Online with max settings, not a crash in sight. Never had a crash, to be honest.

Install Vista? Nothing but issues with it.

My Computer

That may be just a coincidence? The reports of G92 just started making the rounds a week or two ago, and since then, we've just been hearing more and more about the cards failing. I certainly hope we're not seeing the beginning of a huge wave of issues, but the horizon doesn't look clear.

Like I said, give it a shot. Cross your fingers and hope that it isn't your issue... but it is worth looking into.

Alright, got home, and saw that nVidia has put up some new beta drivers--today!

Installed them, reboot, everything comes up fine. I test out the Windows vista 3D games--they work great, I play a few games of Solitaire, hunky-dory.

I decide to test out a REAL game. I load up Hellgate London, and--lo and behold--the intro screen comes on!

All the videos play out, and then the login screen comes up (starts actually using hardware). It lags a little bit, then I start getting these white lines through the top, and it finally pauses--black screen, monitor kicks off (not reading my PC anymore), but the music keeps going. I can alt tab in and out of the game, I hear it continuing to go.

I guess it's a slight step in the right direction?

That may well be an overheating issue...call the manufacturer and tell them what's happening and request a replacement.

I'll do that this afternoon.

Looking at the Rivatuner, I DO have the G92 so I see what you're talking about.

I don't have the box or receipt for it, although I bought it earlier this year, so hopefully they help out!

Also, thanks everyone for the help.

I'm glad there are people out there who are willing to use their knowledge and expertise to help those who have... less :D

My Computer

I have to say Hillean, your not alone…
I have the exact same issues as you with Vista 64 home premium.
I decided to upgrade last weekend from xp 32 where everything ran rock solid.

Vista ran fine until I install any drivers from nvidia (or third party for that matter). Some are worse than others, but none of them allow anything graphic intensive to be stable, including simple things like windows media visualizations. Games barely make it to the menu’s before crashing.

I get screen tearing and nvidia driver errors, black screens, no signals errors and even blue screens.

Everything seems to run ok in safe mode and with generic vga drivers.

I also had the same audio static noise at first, but that seems to have resolved itself.

I’m currently running on an 8800gtx with a brand new 600 Watt PSU (because I thought it might be the problem) but it still persists. Swapping out the GPU for the 7950 gt gives same problems. Like I said everything including games runs rock solid on XP.

I just don’t understand how it could be a heat issue if xp works.

Please let me know if you’ve made any headway. I really hate to have wasted money on this defective OS. …. In the mean time I’ve downgraded back to XP .

My Computer

I had the same problem with my 8600gt when I upgraded from vista 32bit home premium to vista ultimate 64bit.

I ended up taking it back and they had to send it back for testing and I never saw it again after 3 months I finally got it replaced although it was a different model and manufacturer.

So I bought a 9600gt in the mean time and another motherboard and now I am having no problems with 64 bit and it's allot better performance than the 8600GT

Now I am only using the 8600GT on vista home premium 32bit and that's working fine with that OS

So it's either the 8000 series has issues with 64bit or its just a bad batch that's having these problems, only time will tell.

Also maybe there are know problems and that's why Nvidia have been bringing out so many new cards lately hopping people will upgrade before the problem starts happening, could also explain why the 9000 series was so cheap when they came out.

Ya the exact same computer ran vista 32 just fine. I hope its just a driver problem and nothing more serious, I've never really experienced the RMA process.

My Computer

This is getting interesting.

My 8800gts 640mb is solid under vista x64 and it's around 18months old....It could be one or many combinations of things causing problems....

If you have time, or can be bothered, could you all list your hardware - motherboard make - RAM - graphics card make, type and driver version. It could be interesting to see if there is a common link between all your specs.

Hmm, I actually dont know all the specs of the top of my head, but Ill give it a try.

PSU is a 600 watt thermaltake
CPU is AMD X2 64 6000+
GPU is EVGA 8800 GTX
Ram is corsair 4 x 1gb
Audio is Creative X-Fi gamer
MB is ASUS w/ onboard lan (sound and video disabled) dont know specs however it has an ATI chipset.
Vista home Premium 64 with SP1

Drivers: I cant count how many I've tried including the 3rd party ones. Some gave me a blue screen (not bsod) but more like baby blue with no error code (this one was 100.xx). Some would fail 5 secs after loading windows. Some would run totally stable until I pressed the start button.

which drivers do your use Damocles?

try version 100.65 - if you can find it ( it may be the one supplied on the original cd ).

I've been routing around and some people have had blank screen issues with unstable drivers after this version.

Hmm. That's starting to soundlike you need a bios update to the card, or to the motherboard itself, along with the latest chipset drivers. If either of these don't work, I would take a long hard look at the card itself, as possibly being defective.

Another thing I would take a look at, is the monitor drivers and the monitor itself. It could be also that the monitor is starting to go on the fritz, or has trouble with the newest drivers, because if it's driver file.

The monitor is about 3 months old, and when I ran everything on XP it ran like a dream.

The upgrade to Vista 64 has caused nothing but driver issues and errors.

My Computer

Hmm, now that is odd, that going to 64bit Vista would cause a lot of problems.

I had various performance problems on 32bit XP, and ever since I finally made the choice to put 64bit Vista back on my system, I haven't had no problems since.

My system is more stable on 64bit Vista than it was on 32bit XP.
