OK so I'm still getting freezes. They don't seem to be occuring as much, but they are still happening and it still seems to usually be when I am not using it for a period of time. Do you think reinstalling windows might help?

Why not try all the suggestions that you have been given? Its a long shot but check the hard drive, as I have mentioned, before.
Why reinstall before trying everything else, first?

There are theree ways to test
This is good for most hard drives

Hard drive scan usings SeaTools - SeaToolsfor Windows | Seagate - Both long and shorttests
If it does not work, you can go to the website of you hard drive manufacturer and test

If you encounter any problems with that one, your computer probably has a self diagnostic test already installed,

Patonb, is excellent when it comes to hardware problems, whereas my knowldedge is more in the software area. I noticed that he did not mention a potential hard drive problem, probably because, he like me, fails its a slim possibility. As suggested above lets rule it out. If the results are negative, lets look to software.

Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
Run antivirus scan
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
Try with clean boot..

I ran malwarebytes and my antivirus in safe & regular mode and nothing was detected. I know it is not overheating as well. There are no devices with warnings except in safe mode, I get a yellow exclamation over "Consumer IR Device" in system devices.

I will be running the Seatools and memtest soon. I've tried looking for a hard drive test on the Asus website but I can't find anything. Do you know a link where I can do this? I have an AsusX83VB-X2

I could not update it in device manager. Also, I keep getting freezes while running Seatools and have not been able to complete a test. What is speccys?

I never mentioned a bad hard drive, cause you already did Rich in your first post.

I think the error in safe mode is just due to the drivers not booting... well because it's in safe mode.

I'd give the ubuntu livecd whirl if the tests all pass.
