Well it's been a long wait for some of you, but SP1 has finally been released.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

You should now be able to grab SP1 from windows update or you can download the stand alone packages from the following links.

Download: Windows Vista SP1 Five Language Standalone

32bit Package (434.5 MB) (x86)

64bit package (726.5 MB) (x64)

That's what I ended up doing, but it took like half an hour to download on my campus connection. I just think it's weird. My friend who just upgraded to x64 also has the same thing going for him and both of us are tech-savvy enough to notice it.

My Computer

Well, i've finally got SP1 over by bullock cart type of net connection.

I got it through Windows Update as a 68.9MB download. After downloading, the setup warned me that I needed atleast 2 GB of free space to install so I freed up the required space.

Installation took about 35 to 40 minutes with equal time distribution to all three stages. I was already using the alternate windows vista boot screen [check NoGUIBoot in msconfig] so was glad to see achange in that bootscreen! :D

The very first reboot after installation took about 4 - 5 minutes sitting at the welcome screen. After that Vista was transformed into something I quite did not suspect! Vista has gotten quick enough to be at par with XP when it comes to browsing my computer.

There were no driver issues because of my fairly recent system. Other than that, my RAM amount is now reported as 1.50GB and not 1535 MB. The only thing worth noticing is that the system appelet [my computer right click > properties] still does not show the real clock speed as in XP. I have overclocked to 2.04Ghz but it still shows 1.86Ghz.

Other than that everything is working just fine!

If you're never going to use that program then don't worry about the update.
It's a service pack for Microsoft Office and has nothing to do with the O/S.

It seems to have increased the RAM usage on my Laptop, and it is unclear why?
Does anybody either know why, or have had the same problem?

I'm on a Desktop and haven't noticed a change in Ram usage.
My Wifes Laptop has SP-1 and it hasn't increased hers either.
Very odd...
All I've noticed so far is it's doubled my boot up Time, that's odd too...

My Computer

hello, i have been running vista ultimate for 6 months now and installed SP1 from WU had no problems with vista or SP1, just keeps getting better, i thought i had an internet problem after installing SP1 but it was the ISP.
Maybe the way i installed has helped. i did a clean install upgrade from XPmedia edition.
Booted from CDROM to do install.

I just got my XPS420 with Vista Home Premium. I do get automatic downloads from Microsoft. How would I find out if this SP1 has already been downloaded?

Thanks,

Click Start, type "winver" (without quotes) into the search box, then press enter. The "About Windows" box will tell you if you have SP1 or not.

Then, no, you do not have Vista SP1. Here is a screenshot of the About Windows box when I run winver on my system (I highlighted the version in red):

I've downloaded and installed the update. Now my computer hangs on restarting. The only way I can get it to work is to wait for the 'last good install' option and then select that.

Any solutions?

Is this an upgraded version of Vista or an original.
Did you have the Beta version of SP-1 and if so did you un-install it before installing SP-1.

Some times when updating from another O/S things get quirky and this could be the problem.
Try restoring your system back to before you installed SP-1, this would at least get you back to where you started.

My Computer

I think SP-1 is an update the user has to chose, it's not automatic.
You have to go into Windows update and check the Box for the update to download.

That happens only if you have selected to "Notify and Download updates" in Windows Update settings. If you have selected to "Automatically download and Install u[dates at specified time" then it'll be transparent to the average user.

At least thats what I think. Can someone confirm this?

You are quite right if you have ticked the box "Automatically download and install" this will happen automatically. :geek:
