Well it's been a long wait for some of you, but SP1 has finally been released.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

You should now be able to grab SP1 from windows update or you can download the stand alone packages from the following links.

32bit Package (434.5 MB) (x86)

64bit package (726.5 MB) (x64)

Windows Update doesnt seem to find the SP1 update for me..

I checked to see if it installed itself without me realising but no such luck.

Is there a reason why Windows Update doesnt show the update for me?

Downloaded and installed this weekend. Enjoyed a good portion of Paul Newman in Slap Shot while it was going through its multiple restarts. But, having ran it for a couple of days now, I will give it a tentative thumbs up. No problems noted, and at least one issue (file copy speed) seems to have been addressed. Good deal.

As a lifelong Mac adherant, I will confess to having been skeptical about Vista. Having had a couple of weeks of solid performance from it, I am less so now.

Good to hear good things about Vista - although I have always been a fan of Vista some of the bad press really got to me - it is amazing how many people believe everything they read without testing things themselves.

Well, I'm nothing if not flexible. And realistic. I still miss the classic Mac OS and WordPerfect, but I also know it's not coming back, and frankly, I can only spend so much time in a day repairing ten-year-old laptops so I can run classic. I like OS X, but I didn't have a portable that could run it, and I sure didn't have the money to buy one.

So. Why not an Intel-based laptop? Half the price of a MacBook? Sure sounded good to me. That, and I've been running XP on a PII desktop for years, and I work on them daily and know it's a good solid OS. Vista is a tricked-out version of XP, and it's had a year to go through its inevitable growing pains. So why not at least try it?

I tried it. I like it. It's pretty, it's nice, it's pretty nice. It allows me--and this is the bottom line--to work, and not to have to tinker with the OS on a daily basis. Oh sure, there's virus sigs and Defender updates (this is Windows, after all) but on the whole, I'm spending a lot more time getting work done and less time fiddling.

Heck, I may be running Vista ten years from now. I don't think I'll ever convince my wife the former Mac SysAdmin, but that's cool.

Hmm so I left the update installing as it said it was going to take an hour. Came back to see my laptop saying it did not start properly and it needed to do a Windows Startup Repair or something. After doing that I checked to see if the update worked and it seems its failed. Anyone else had this?

Should I just try again?

Have you checked that you had all the updates? If so, then try again.

After about 15 pages on this subject I feel we will have at least 15 more. Question, I have been havinging trouble with IE7 loading at the same speed as before SP1. After clicking on the icon the screen appears and then there is about 5 or 6 clicking sounds and it's ready to rock. I have increased my internet or connection speed to 1.5 and that soved the video problem but not the loading. Ran the IE without addons and it loaded 50% faster. I have 2.00 GB RAM and processor is AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core @4200+ 2.20GHz. Any suggestions? Thanks. NOTE: Disk is at 20% used 80% free.

Wesley, you are mistaken. The Windows Vista SP1 download, when done through Windows Update is around 60MB, but then only if you've been keping up-to-date with all updates over that past year, since the initial release of Windows Vista.

Basically, if you where to perform a fresh install of Windows Vista, then the SP1 download would be closer to the 600-700MB mark. The option of downloading the single package (as opposed to using Windows Update), is that you can download it once, and then apply SP1 to as many computers as required. And, if you are a single-pc user, then downloading the single package once will allow you to apply SP1 over again whenver needed, without having to download it again.

Either way, the single download is the better solution.

You either install all of it, or not at all. There is nothing optional about it.

But as z3r010 said, you really should install SP1. It includes all the updates of the past year or so, and fixes some nasty bugs in addition to improving the overall performance and reliability.

I agree with both John and Peter. If you are using the 32-bit version of Vista and have Office 2007, then, as a bonus, both the full standalone service packs for both these products will fit on a single 700MB CD. For the 64-bit versions, you will need to use a DVD as the files are larger.

Oddly enough the 32bit ISO is just over a gig bigger than the 64bit ISO image...Yet the X64-SP1 update is larger than the X32-SP1 update image...
