Vista64 - Lots of problems

Good point Steven. The motherboard itself works with Vista X64 - I have 2 friends using it. It should not need a new BIOS so soon, although that is not guaranteed, so finding the *cause* of the problem is the first step.

@Frustrated - You'll need to check the area above as Dmex mentioned - but if this is a new install, then you'll need to figure out what the error code was this time, or else look for errors that correspond to the time the application crashed.

FWIW - I am using the 175.16 drivers on my 8800GTS without a hitch.

Ok, the "Windows has recovered from an error" has popped up and it tells me where the .dmp files are, but when I try to open them with notepad it says "ACCESS DENIED," and if I try to open them via Event Viewer, it won't let me. Any Ideas?

I'm not connected to the internet (There isn't a x64 driver for the WUSB54G v4) so I can't use automatic updates or anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help and ideas.

On a side note, when I tried to play the sample video I could see the video (barely) while the screen flashed green. I installed VLC and using that I can see the video just fine. Does Vista64 have all the codecs for downloaded/recorded shows that are in .avi (or xvid)?

Thanks, Dmex. This is what WHEA says (there are five of them):
On the "General" tab it says: "WHEA successfully initialized. 4 error sources are active. Error record format version is 10."

Then on the "Details" tab it says:
ErrorSourceCount 4
ErrorRecordFormat 10
ErrorSourceTableLength 4320
ErrorSourceTable 10505F0480FAFFFF60E5210100F8FFFFFFE6FF5E89C91C54CBA8865ABE14913BB00000, And then a lot more numbers...

Keywords under "System" are all 0x400000000000000000.

Is that at all helpful? I can't make any sense of it.

Thanks Ted - I tried to search the forum 3 times for 'Visa codecs" and it kept ending up in an error....I think, in retrospect, because of the fact that it was searching for Vista *or* codecs, and since most posts are about Vista, it was overloading he server with the search results....

@Frustrated - the above link is what you'll want to install for digital media in Vista X64. Also, be aware that there are *2* packages for X64 - the regular codec package, and then right underneath that, the X64 package - install the regular first and the X64 after that.

You're not missing much...

Hi frustrated man - I have a very similar config to yours.

I tried V64 a few months back but quit due to driver problems. The reality is for the present time there seems to be absolutely nothing to gain from using V64.
You might say that you unlock the full 4GB RAM, but you would never need it unless you had several hardcore memory sucking applications open together.
I liked the search/index feature, and the side bar and aero were nice to look at, but there really is nothing essential that I miss.

I went back to XP - It's really fast and solid.

I really hope that PC software vendors get moving onto 64 bit and multicore processor support, but for now it seems they are 5 years behind processors.
It seems all the programming talent of the world is working with consoles these days!

I recently bought all new equipment:
E6850 3.0GHz
EVGA 790i Ultra MoBO
EVGA 8800GTS 512MB KO
OCZ 700W-SLI PSU
OCZ 2x2GB (4GB) 13333 RAM
150GB Raptor

I attempted to install Vista Ultimate 64 (w/SP1) with 4GB. Didn't work - BSOD. I took 1 stick out so now I had 2GB. After about 5 reboots, I finally got Vista to install. However, as soon as I'd install the latest gfx driver (175.16-Vista64) it would crash. I spent hours on the phone with Microsoft - they couldn't solve it. Called EVGA, they said they hadn't heard of any problems with the latest driver. I installed an older driver (169.25) and got it work. I never got the system stable, and I don't think it's the gfx card.

I tried installing Gears of War, which seemed to install just fine, however, if I started to do something else (I tried this twice) it would give me a BSOD. Then, I tried installing it and nothing else. It crashed on it's own giving me a BSOD. Another time I was just looking around the features in Control Panel and it crashed. Bottom line - it was never very stable.

I decided to format my drive and start fresh. This time, I could get the Vista disc to load and install, but it would crash at various places during install (sometimes after "Installing Features," but most of the time just before it would finish - so about 30-45 minutes into the installation). The errors I have received are the following (but not limited to, :o):

Page_Fault_in_a_non-paged_area

ox124

0x3b

0x7e

Then at one point I received an "fbwf.sys" error.

After spending several more hours on the phone with Microsoft yesterday (and virtually all day trying to get it working) and talking to EVGA (who do not think it's a gfx card problem) I finally decided to give up on 64-bit for now and just stick with 32-bit.

(On a somewhat unrelated note, while I was on the phone with Microsoft, I skimmed numerous forums and it seems as though there aren't too many wireless adapters that have 64-bit drivers, or at least any that seemed to have worked consistently for more than a few people.)

Long story long - I'm giving up on Vista 64 for now. I installed Vista Home Premium 32-bit last night and received NO errors, NO BSOD's, and installed the latest drivers with NO problems.

My hope is that Microsoft will fix all these bugs and release a more stable 64-bit version. For now, in my opinion, it's not worth the hours wasted trying to troubleshoot, and then if you do get it running, have an unstable machine.

My Computer

Thanks for the Codec links.

I just installed Gears of War just fine. When I did it the first time I had x64 up and running, it crashed on several occasions. So that's the good news.

I also just ran 3dMark06 on x64 and I'm a little disappointed. My score while running 32-bit Vista was 12,227 versus my x64 score of 10,529!!! Any ideas? (I am using an older driver (from December 07) because when I install the latest, it crashes...oh, and I only have Directx9c installed, because I'm not connected to the internet to install the latest directx.

Speaking of which...anyone found a good ethernet-to-wireless adapter or bridge?

Hi guys,

I think the Vista Codec page your looking for is here...http://www.vistax64.com/sound-audio/152850-vista-codec-pack-32bit-64bit-media-player-codecs.html

The event info you provided wasnt enough to identify the cause....Check the Administrative Alerts log "Event-Viewer> Custom Views> Administrative Events" and also check "Applications and Services> Microsoft> Windows> CodeIntegrity> operational" for any errors relating to the BSOD or driver corruption.

A good eth 2 Wireless would be a linksys router (WRT54GL) flashed with DDWRT :)

I just tried to run Gears of War and got this error:
"C:\programfiles(x86)\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\wargame-g4wlive.exe: You cannot run the game with modified exectuable code. Please reinstall the game."

Shame on Microsoft for releasing a "For Windows" game that can't even run properly. Anyone know a way around it?

Thanks, Dmex. I was planning on getting a WRT54GL when I move out in September anyway, so why not now. So It will work as a bridge to my family's wireless modem and won't conflict (they're not using a router, just the DSL modem - common Actiontec (with a broken ethernet port)?

Hi FrustratedMan,

Have you updated and patched Gears of War? Patches and Fixes: Gears of War Patch #2 - Demo Movie Patch Download Section - GamersHell.com
That error just tells me the game or something else modified or cracked the main.exe so the update should fix it :zip: ...

AND

When you get your WRT54GL, come here and find me! so I can run you though the flash procedure for DDWRT or you can brick the router. (very, very simple once you know what to look-out for) I can also help you set it up so it wont conflict with your current setup ( Im using mine to access the internet for free using next-doors wifi without casuing one problem ;) )

thats interesting that your Mark06 score dropped that much from changing to 64 bit.. maybe it's the driver.. if they are wrong it makes a world of Difference.. also Mark06 only supports DX9 if I remember correctly.. 3DMark Vantage is for Vista only DX10 users.. so you could get DX10 and try the trial of Vantage and you might do better, although it's scores don't have any relation or number matches to 06.. they are completely different. like most of the new 3Dmarks are.. but thats what I'd do.

Ya I have 64 bit and I just did 3Dmark06 also, I have not downloaded the Trial of Vantage yet.. it is only good for ONE use, and 06 trial works over and over.. so thats why.

I don't have anything to compare it to.. but In 3Dmark06 after my PC updated and installed DX9.. cuz I only had 10.. it ran Mark06 and I got a 11,591 score with demo's terrible non changeable settings, and with a Q6700 Stock, and a BFG 8800 GTS OCE the 640MB version.. and only 2gb of RAM.. that score seemed pretty good IMO, cuz my old system only scored something like a 5,400 haha..

I'm waiting for my RAM, it will be here tuesday, 4GB of G-skill 4-4-4-12 pc2-8000 ram.. so that should Improve it a lot.

Plus I OC'd my CPU up to 3.33GHz, and my GPU core from 540 to 621 so far.. and today I moved it up to 648 Core clock, but haven't tested it yet.. so I'll go again with the OC's and the RAM and hopfully get a better score!

Another issue: I just attached a 500GB FAT32 drive and it recognizes, or at least it shows up as "Disk 2" under Computer Management, but it doesn't show any information and I can't access it. When I go to initialize it, it says "Device Not Ready." Anyone know how to solve this?

FAT32 supports 500gb, or at least mine works...I had to do FAT32 so I can use it for my PS3. Although, I kind of wish Sony had gone with NTFS...

LOL, maybe I should do my homework first...I have been informed and checked that FAT32 supports upto 2TB with only one serious drawback when files are deleted and new files written to the media, directory fragments tend to become scattered over the entire disk making reading and writing slower over time.

 I forgot that one :p
