Oh, and I put Arctic Silver 5 back on instead of the Zalman STG1 and I'm running about 10 degrees C cooler, so the message board (not here) that said that the STG1 runs about 2 degrees C cooler than AS5 is garbage.

I use the standard thermal paste and decent chassis fans. AS5 can be messy and a pain to remove.

hi Frustrated man: sorry but lack of time, so i did not read all the posts here, only yours.

If solved fine, if not, well it seems you have the same problem i had.

Same memory, namely first 4x1333 mhz OC sticks, then because of the crashes, switched to 2x2 GB OC.

Problem was the timings on my Asus board needed to be set FIXED, not automatic.

So in my case it was the bios that needed some help.

Do not know however if you have/had the same problems

François

@FM - I like AS5 as well, but I also bought the AS TIM removal kit, so if I have to remove and reinstall I am using good products to thoroughly clean my parts.

Also, you might want to look into f_vo's post - and use the eVGA forums that is what they are there for. I am new to OCing and eVGA boards, but I have found all the answers I need regarding my board, how to OC my system, general settings, etc. there. Since you have their board *and* their video card (came as I do, except I went with the 780 not the 790) you'll have a lot more *motherboard* specific help - and surely you'll find at least a couple of users with the same mobo and memory combo to whom you can talk to *directly* for advice and whatnot.

Ok, so after reading all seven pages of this thread, it occured to me that no one has asked if the memory voltage is set correctly. Correctly in that most MB will not "auto" set the correct voltage on memory sticks requiring 2 or more volts.

So my question is what are the voltage requirements of the memory as printed on the sticks...and... is the board set to that voltage? While you're at it look at the memory timings as well.

Just a thought.

sygnus21, i mentionned the bios (for the memory) of the board needs to be set FIXED, including of course the voltage of the memory.

My Computer

Yeah, I called OCZ within a few days of building the machine and got the correct timings from them, and that solved a FEW of the problems.

I'm using 7-7-7-20, with 1.7 volts. After reading numerous OCZ forum topics, I'm wondering if the occasional hangs I get is from the memory needing more juice, like maybe 1.8?

That's why I inquired about the voltage! Can you not go to OCZ's website find the model number and get the info you need? Or look at one of the sticks.

Hi Frustrated (apt username 4 sure...)

This may seem odd, but if your PSU has 2 - 6 pin GPU connections and you're only using one for your card, try switching them around.
I don't know why, but this popped into my head and I think you may be getting bad power to your GFX card and it's causing weird issues...I have seen that happen before.

OCZ700GXSSLI680W / 12V = 56A maximum but it has 4 x 18A maximum rails? Can you combine two of the rails to feed your GFX card. They do need 26A. This is why I use the PC Power and Cooling single rail power supplies.

Thanks, Chappy. I'll try that, although I haven't had any problems with my gfx card per se - I can spend hours playing a game with demanding graphics (Doom3 1280 x 1064 with Ultra settings) and I don't get any crashes.

3B and 124 could be a power supply issue. What is your power supply specs? Do you have a multimeter? Check 12V, Yellow+ and Black-.

I'm going to see if I can take a multimeter home from work tonight and test the voltages. I found a post on OCZ's forums that explain how to test it, so I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks!

12V seems a bit high and 5V is slightly under. What is on the circuit with your computer? You don't want to share with high draw appliances like refrigerators or A/V hardware.

Well I don't think anything else that draws a lot of power is on the same circuit.

I did, however, do a fresh install of Vistax64 (from technet) and I'm still having the same driver problems (with 175.16 or whatever the latest is 175.xx) so I'm still using the 169.25; Windows Update still doesn't work properly or see the Ultimate Extras (I have an open incident with Microsoft and I did everything they told me to (even with no other drivers installed) and that didn't solve it, but I sent them a few logs and info files, so hopefully they'll figure it out), and neither does Windows Defender...still get the same error, so I guess I'll just update the definitions manually.

I'm reinstalling everything as we speak. I'm confident I have the hardware errors worked out. I think I was getting some of the BSOD's because the memory was using a little more juice than what I was told it would use.

What is not installed in the device manager? What has ! next to it? Did you install the chipset patches for your motherboard and Vista?

Well, I think I finally solved many of the problems I had. I ended up using a friend's disk to install and then used the key that Technet gave me and Windows Update now works properly, as well as Windows Defender (and Dreamscenes).

It's strange that Microsoft Technet would post a bad file, but I downloaded it two separate times with the same results...I don't get it either, because others say they downloaded that file and it worked just fine. Must have been the burner?

Thank you all for your help. Rest easy, now.
