Hi, Richard thanks for the help here. I didn't realise quicktime had so many registry entries! I'll be sure to refer to this in the future (I can already smell that somethings going to go horribly wrong with my PC soon :s ) and of course if anyone else experiences this kind of problem on the forum.

Oli

PCs aren't quite like your mac where you can just delete the program! There always seems to be a bit of residual mess!

Even on my mac there's a little bit of residual mess leftover, but fortunately someone made a nice little user friendly app which removes those residual folders just by dragging the app you want to remove's icon onto the window :p

Thanks again Richard.

Hi Richard and thanks too for your suggestions.

Not a very good idea to just delete Program Files folders. It just leaves a massive mess on the System, in the Windows folder, in the App Data folders, and in the registry. Quicktime has almost 600 registry entries. These will cause problems later, especially if you try to open a file type and the quicktime program is not there etc. etc.
Hadn't realised the above, so I will take heed and leave be!

I have now reinstalled ITunes & QT via Apple and at the initial "registering modules" stage of the download the "there is a problem" window appears. Having clicked OK, a "rolling back action" occurs and the download continues.

The next error message is the "acknowledgements.rtf" (which is a word doc). So again I clicked OK and the download finishes but with errors.

I followed your step by step instructions for the ack.rtf folder and then reinstalled it all again.

As before, the "there is a problem" appeared at the same stage of the download, but further down the install the ack.rtf was noticeable by its absence! - Thanks.

So it seems the WI package is corrupt? I'll just give them a ring and see if they'll bake a cake..!

Thanks people for the advice so far - unfortunately even after Richards suggestion of changing the ITunes files permissions etc., the dreaded Windows Installer package error still appears!!

Any other suggestions? (Puzzeld, yours didn't work either, thanks anyway!).

Kev.

Only other thing i can think off is in your registry.
When you delete files there is most times stuff left behind.

I personally feel there is something belonging to ITunes in your PC preventing the installation.

Also if you have ITunes plugin in Myspace for music that can prevent ITunes updating also as it happened to me,also any ITunes files you need to Uninstall everything belonging to ITunes to do a clean update.

Example.I cannot update Firefox browser if i have the Firefox browser icon in Quick launch it refuses to install until i delete it.

Do you ever clean your registry?

Hi puzzeld,
I've run CCleaner to tidy the registry so would like to think that it's ok.

I don't have ITunes plugin Myspace so it can't be that either!

I'll give it a while longer to try and research & resolve the mysteries surrounding the Windows Installer Package, otherwise I feel a journey of enlightenment coming on to pay some windows cave guru to resolve the matter once and for all! :)

Digging a little further, I've now checked the registry permissions which are all set correctly, and have also checked the services.msi which also appears to have the correct settings.(see attached), unless someone knows different of course!

Just an update for anyone having similar problems and wondering how things have progressed since the initial posting.

Unfortunately I'm no nearer solving the msi mystery. On a positive note I have learnt quite a lot about various things along the way, but my ITunes library etc remains unusable!

Someone had suggested downloading Winamp and a separate update to enable me to utilise Itunes via that. The downloads were successful, but a new problem has now arisen in that when plugging in the ipod usb, although it will start recharging, and all relevent apple drivers are installed, the ipod icon does not appear on my computer nor on Winamp. In turn this means I can't access the music files on the ipod! And therefore rendering this method also unusable - marvellous! :)

I think Apple should make separate software for Windows, instead of doing this retarded crap of installing 500 services on a Windows computer to make it work.

iTunes is slow, and QuickTime is worse... I use to have them both on my computer, and they took up my resources. I got sick of it one day, and game my iPod touch to my mother, and uninstall all the Apple garbage on my computer, and it ran 10x faster.

I have a Cell Phone that plays all my music, and it works great, better sound quality than an iPod. I would rather buy a Zune for someone, instead of an iPod. Pretty much everyone I know has had problems with their iPods via Computer or the device itself.

Sorry about hacking away at Apple, and not helping you with your problem, I will not learn about Apple/Unix since no one uses it, so I am helpless on Apple Software, even if it is rigged to work for Windows. I will never buy an Apple, and never use one, crap support, and crap software/hardware that constantly broke down is all I got from them when I was their customer...

I hope you can fix your problem, best of luck to you. :)

Hello,

I think your best bet is to remove all trace of iTunes, Quicktime, and everything else from your System.

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe WARNING!: This tool is very powerful, and you should do nothing we do not tell you to. You can do huge damage to your computer with this tool.

Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool (This will be at the top section of All Programs)

Remove all the following entries (the program will seem to crash while removing, let it finish) If any of these entries are in more than once, remove all of the entries. If you think I have missed an entry, confirm it with me before removal. Check at the bottom of the list, and under "(All Users)"

Apple Application Support
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Software Update
Bonjour
iTunes
Mobile Me Control Panel
QuickTime
Safari

Restart your computer, and reinstall iTunes and Quicktime together, followed by Safari. You do not have to have to install Safari, and do not worry if any are not in the list.

Richard

H Richard,
There is never any rush.
Richard

Because I've been trying to resolve it for ages, I'm just keen to try the next option asap!!
It's just as well I've not been holding my breath in anticipation of a quick solution!

Well, I downloading the msicuu2.exe and ran it.........this is what it gave me part way through when running it, (I did run it as administrator).....and checking the msicuu2.exe properties/security, all three users have the same permissions....?

I do have CCleaner installed will this do the job required?

Hi,

  • Navigate to the file(MsiZap.exe) and right click on it and select Properties.
  • Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  • Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  • Click "Other Users and Groups".
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK THREE times.
  • Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  • Click Add.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK.
  • Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  • Click OK TWO times.
This will make absolutely sure that the permissions are correct. Make sure that only one instance of the program is running, do not open two. Try it again in case your Anti-Virus scanned it just at that moment. Run chkdsk to check for errors on the disk. I have seen similar problem to this caused by faulty/dying disks.

Do Run as Administrator, though I think you are already doing this. Make sure you right click and select Run as Administrator, just being an Administrator is not necessarily enough.

Hello again!
OK, so I've adjusted the permissions for the msizap and run the program again.
This time another error message appeared(see attached).

So I adjusted permissions as before and ran it again. This time when the same error message appeared I clicked "ignore" and lo and behold the installer clean up successfully installed.

Having run installer clean up I've now deleted recommended entries. (Fyi the ones not appearing were:Apple software update, iTunes, Mobile me and Safari).

So I'm now going to reinstall iTunes & Quicktime...........

Mmmmm....a touch of deja vu!

Having uninstalled relevant elements, rebooted and re-installed iTunes & quicktime, the "there is a problem" error box appears before iTunes installed and then it goes to rollback.

Letting it continue installing quicktime, the message on completion then is the "error 7" window.

Although I still can't access iTunes, for the first time the iTunes icon did reappear on the desktop, (it was like seeing an old friend!). I clicked on it just to see what would happen and the "please wait" box appears, which duly hangs and has to be stopped in its tracks.

All good fun! ;)
