Free Software List for Vista

Re: PromptHere 1.0

PromptHere is a variation on the old Command Prompt Here utility.

Rather than use a Registry entry I coded it as a Tray Hotkey.
No install. Unzip exe and readme to an empty folder.
It creates no Registry entries, .ini files, or any additional files.
You may want to create a shortcut for your StartUp or
TaskBar.

Usage: Run in Tray. Alt Middle Mouse Click opens a prompt for
folder(s) selected in Explorer. Each prompt has the respective
selected folder as the current directory.

It is free for you to use at your own risk. Available right now
from my hotkeys page:

Hotkeys

PromptHere has been updated to v. 1.1

If you are in a folder it's intuitive to select a file and
hit a hotkey to get a command prompt in that folder.
The new version does that. Also it should work in
file managers, not just explorer windows.

I eliminated the paranoia mode and let it active in all
windows in the belief not many utilities out there are
using Alt Middle Click anyway. It's just too convenient
not to use it this way. :)

The new version is on the hotkey page now:
http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

edit: make it v. 1.3 Added that if you click a blank spot
in an Explorer Folder it tries to open a command prompt
and return you to that folder using macros(sending keys,
copying to clipboard etc..)

All together it should be the only "command prompt here" type
utility you need to run to do 99% of what you want.

DVDAuthorGui v. 1.022

The homepage of DVDAuthorGUI

This is a nice straight-ahead free DVD authoring program. Esp. useful for do it yourself types who like to encode the video to DVD format(.m2v file) then just mux in the audio and subtitles. You can do chapters, menus and multiple title DVDs. The program has been a staple in my video toolbox for years.

MP3Gain is a simple little program to set the volume of your music collection.

I've been using it as i record my old vinyl! You can chose individual files or an entire folder. It also lets you chose the "target volume" in increments of 1.5 decibels.

The average MP3 takes about 5 seconds to analyze then another 5 to adjust/save with no loss in sound quality.

Quick and easy!

sike - send files/folders to recycle bin via command prompt

This is another one of mine. It's a command line program to send files or folders to the recycle bin.

You can download from my page:

Faves Downloads

Just copy sike.exe to a folder in your Path.

It does not create any files, registry or
.ini file settings. Should be good for
a USB key.

It should run on any flavor of Windows that
the latest AutoIt3 release runs on.

See the included Readme for particulars.

SrtFix

Here's another little quickie I knocked off. Should work in all flavors of Windows, XP and later.

It's called SrtFix. The only .srt subtitle problem it fixes is time lines that have periods instead of commas in the milliseconds column on the time lines. It can be a pain to substitute only on certain lines in a text editor. SrtFix only does the substitution on lines that have "-->" string in the line, which indicates a time interval for the subtitle. If it finds a period it replaces it with a comma.

Usage: SrtFix filename.srt

output is filename.srt.fixed

the original .srt file is not changed.

You can download here:

As usual, it's free for you to use at your own risk, but donations are appreciated. :)

Hi rober116 and welcome to Vista Forums

Which version did you try? There are actually 2 series available, the 1.2 and the 1.3 which is currently in Beta. If it is the Beta version, you may need to report the issue to them, and give them details of your hardware. There could possibly be a compatibility issue.

edit:
PromptHere v. 2.4 Smoothed application of the blur effect so that the prompt doesn't show black, then change color. The blur behind is active when it appears. Also on systems both with and without glass, the last prompt opened should get the focus.

GlassPrompt 1.1

GlassPrompt just opens a cmd.exe prompt and enables the "blur behind" effect if you are running Vista or Windows Seven with Glass enabled.

It uses the same mechanism as my PromptHere program but it's compiled in FreeBasic resulting in a 32 bit stand-alone exe less than 25 KB in size. Also it does not run in the background. It launches a command prompt, then quits.
No install. Does not do any Registry or .ini file settings.

A couple of hotkey utilities to move the active window to 1 of 9 positions(sort of like the 9 positions in Tic Tac Toe.)

http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

TicTac uses the numberpad keys 1 - 9 with a modifier(such as Alt or Control) to move the active window to a corresponding position.

TicClick does the same thing except it only uses the mouse. WinKey Left MouseClick pops up a grid with the 9 positions and you click the position you wish to move the window to.

Both have only single monitor support. But if you have your Taskbar set to on top, it should not obscure it, since it makes OS calls to get the desktop work area when a hotkey is hit. Likewise changing screen res while the program is running shouldn't bother it(as long as the grid isn't showing at the time.)

Edit: Note that these programs on my hotkey page now have a Check for Update command in the Tray Menu:

ReOpen
FolderCache
Selector
TicClick
TicTac

This is the first time I've implemented going online to check for updates so a few notes may be in order:

It seems to work fine on my system, but I don't have dial-up to test with a dial-up connection. The function uses standard Inet calls, so it should be pretty vanilla.

The update process only sends file download requests to the server. No other info is sent. The file version info in the .exe file on your system is compared with the latest version available, that's read from the downloaded file. If the one online is newer, it asks if you want to download. The version info is in a small .ini file I keep updated on the server. The name of your running program is used to look up the file version info from the downloaded .ini file. Once the update check routine has the info it needs from the .ini file, it's deleted. Super simple. :)

If you update, the zip file and the program folder are both opened, and the program quits, so you can overwrite it with the newer files.

What is the difference between System Restore and ShadowExplorer? I have Vista Home Premium and when I need to go back in time I just pick a restore point. I can see the advanage of seeing what is on the system and I guess from the features you can pick a file or folder that maybe got deleted and restore just that. I am interested in this and will add it after I do some research.Thank You.

Brink:

Thanks for all your work on the software list (WOW!). There are many utilities that I am itching to try. I scanned the list for a file shredder, something that is easy to use and preferably integrated into the right-click (menu?), but did not see anything. Did I miss it? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.
