End of the road: Microsoft terminates support for Windows Vista today

After a decade, Microsoft has finally cut off support for the Windows Vista operating system.Mainstream support for Windows Vista ended back in April 10, 2012. However, its extended support for the second service pack lasted for five more years.
By April 11, which is today, Microsoft will no longer offer hotfixes, security patches, or any sort of update to its users around the globe. With this in consideration, anyone using Windows Vista past the support date could leave the OS vulnerable to security risks and viruses that could harm the computer. Internet Explorer 9 on Vista has also been discontinued, which could expose users to even more threats. In line with this, Microsoft will also cease providing technical support for computers running the OS.

We have liftoff. Server 2008 updates have been successfully installed on Vista. We'll seek out the .NET updates, but I don't anticipate any issues. So it appears we're good to go (hopefully until January 2020, but we'll take it a month at a time).

I'm hopeful that some interest will be renewed in this forum, since this definitely extends the longevity of Vista for devoted users.

Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista - Windows Vista - MSFN
I am not in the habit of bumping old Vista News items, but this is a special day! This discussion should have been a thread in the Windows Updates section of the forums. There has actually never been such a thread there, and I am quite certain that there never will be! I am already beginning to understand how Jody felt regarding the lack of interest, as the most active gurus here are currently busy collecting patches that are 2 to 10 years old.

Happy Second Anniversary of Vista's EOL Everyone!

It's the same way on the Windows 8 Forums too. In fact, before today, there wasn't even a post about the new Canary release of Microsoft Edge running on Windows 8x.

The biggest Windows 6.0 news is actually that the April 2019 rollup changes the build number to 6.0.6003. I have thus far shied away from it, not wishing to explore possible program compatibility issues when no one here seems to value a patched OS anyway (although there is much interest in patches for old versions of MS Office at the moment). I no longer use Vista for web browsing anyway.

That is exactly why I haven't tried applying 2008 updates to Vista. They aren't designed for Vista and there are differences between 2008 and Vista. Windows Server 2008 is better than Vista, but why?

Any differences my be subtle and (until now) the kernel version stayed the same but still there are differences and a subtle difference could lead to instability.

I wasn't aware that you had even patched your Vista VM to April 2017 standards with official Vista patches. If you only use it for a few games, then it is understandable that you wouldn't want to trouble yourself over this matter. I am much more concerned about those who are still using Vista as a web browsing platform. There are differences between Vista Home Basic and Vista Ultimate also, but Microsoft did not make different patches for them. Aside from Itanium-based versions of Server 2008 patches, which actually had a different file size, it looks like Vista patches and Server 2008 patches were actually identical. Of course this is only relevant because Microsoft no longer labels new Windows 6.0 patches as being for Windows Vista.

Edit: BTW @townsbg, since your screenshot shows that you have a fully-updated Server 2008 VM, please test as much Vista-compatible software on it as you reasonably can! If a program no longer works on Server 2008 after the April rollup, then I have no doubt that it would no longer work on Vista either - which is my only real concern about the build number change. Maybe you could post your results in the Software forum. Thanks!

I don't trust the difference between Vista and 2008 (which we don't even know what they are) over the differences between the Vista editions for a 2008 patch to not screw up Vista because M$ isn't considering Vista when creating the patch. Didn't you have a 2008 patch screw up your install of Vista? Now that there is a build difference I would definitely be skeptical using a 2008 patch on Vista.

Really I don't use 2008 at all and I don't have a lot of time but I'll see what I can do. It look though like I'm going to have to reinstall Vista again. :(

No, my Vista installation is doing just fine. If I install the April updates, then there wouldn't be a build difference. Your fears are not very helpful.

Precisely. This kind of rebuttal from the likes of not only townsbg here, but even folks at the Windows 8 fourms does not bode well for those wanting to actually use these legacy operating systems on an ongoing basis.

Over at 8 Forums for example, too many posts deal with how to upgrade from 8x to 10. I wish that would stop immediately; that forum should deal with wanting to continue running Windows 8, not leave the OS. Well same here: posts should dwell with wanting to get THE MOST out of Windows Vista. And by the way, most of the concerns of Server 2008 updates as of late, also affect Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

I skipped the Spectre and Meltdown updates for both Vista and 8, and lately I've been not updating the core OS for other reasons, but not because of incompatibilities. The updates up until March 2019 are codebase identical. I wish naysayers would stop trying to cloud the issue wwith unfounded concerns. Sheesh!

This is why I've become absent from DM Forums lately. I would prefer to be in a community that embraces ideas and challenges norms. MSFN, for all it's issues (and might I say it's a tad heavily biased towards XP and 9x - which I don't condone) at least does this. You just have to avoid certain threads, and pick and choose what is good.

Cheers All!
:)

Hi Jody,

I have just been playing around to see how viable it is to integrate most updates into Vista Installation media.

It is very successful. There are a few that can't be integrated, but they can be picked up easily after the OS has been installed.

I used dism++ to integrate them . It handles installing and uninstalling vista updates very well. Tricky bit was working out which could be integrated.

I am putting together a downlad list for those which will integrate.
