Boot Up Time

How to See What Your Boot Up Time is in Vista

information   Information
To optimize the boot/shutdown of Windows, it is necessary to know precisely the reboot time of the computer to be able to refine its adjustments.
But rather than having the hand on a stop watch at the time of the reboot, better use this easy way, You will appreciate how simple it is to use and the precision of the result.

The relative time value will then give you a point of comparison to optimize the boot/shutdown of your computer.
Note   Note
For fun you can post your results here: ReBoot Time

EXAMPLE: ReBoot-Time dialog box
NOTE:
This is what you will see after running the VB Script file from below and when you computer finishes restarting.

ReBoot_Time.jpg
Here's How:
information   Information
In order to calculate the time of rebooting Windows, we will use a VB Script (Visual BASIC Scripting Edition). Let us learn first how it works.

The script writes a value in the registry (HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Current Version \ run) so that it can be started again when booting. Then, another value containing the time is writen in the registry when the reboot is launched. While rebooting, the script records the hour in a variable then checks if the first value containing the time exists. If so, it is then enough to compare two times in order to obtain the time of rebooting. Then, the two keys added in the registry are removed (the run key and the key where the time is stored).

1) Open your favorite text editor (notepad will do the job perfectly) and copy/paste the following script:

Code:
Option Explicit
On Error Resume Next
Dim Wsh, Time1, Time2, Result, PathFile, MsgResult, MsgA, AppName, KeyA, KeyB, TimeDiff
MsgA = "Please close all running applications and click on OK."
KeyA = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RestartTime\"
KeyB = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\RestartTime"
AppName = "ReBoot-Time"
Set Wsh = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
PathFile = """" & WScript.ScriptFullName & """"
Result = wsh.RegRead(KeyA & "Times")
if Result = "" then
MsgResult = Msgbox (MsgA, vbOKCancel, AppName)
If MsgResult = vbcancel then WScript.Quit
Wsh.RegWrite KeyA & "Times", left(Time,8), "REG_SZ"
Wsh.RegWrite KeyB, PathFile, "REG_SZ"
Wsh.Run "cmd /c Shutdown -r -t 00", false, 0
else
Wsh.RegDelete KeyA & "Times"
Wsh.RegDelete KeyA
Wsh.RegDelete KeyB
TimeDiff = DateDiff("s",Result,left(Time,8))
MsgBox "Your computer reboots in " & TimeDiff & " seconds", VbInformation, AppName
end if
wscript.Quit

2) Save the file wherever you want on the same HDD (desktop for example) as ReBoot-Time.vbs (you can choose whatever name as far as the extension is ".VBS".

You can also download the script file here:

download < Click to Download

Use of the Script:
  • Double click on the script icon if it is on your desktop or on the file if you saved it in a particular folder.
  • Close all the running applications and click the OK button in the dialog box.
  • The computer will reboot and when Windows will be ready to be used, a new dialog box will open displaying the time your computer took to reboot.
Voila!

Hello Venom,

Looking at your system specs, I would say that was not a bad time at all. You can see what others are getting at this link to help compare with yours though.

Thanks, I think it would be less than a Minute if I did not stop to login first. Plus at the boot up screen where the Status bar goes across use to make 4-5 swipes after SP2 its now 6-7. But is does shut down way faster. Maybe after the SP2 cleanup tool is used it might be faster.

Hello all:

I am new here and, while I had added this script to my computer and tested it fine in the past, it now does not work when I click on it....I get the error messege "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate persmissions to access the item". Any clu what could be causing this all of a sudden?

I have Vista Home Premium (no Service Packs)
3GB RAM
Intel Quad Core Q6600

I have already checked to make sure I have Admin Rights, as I am loged into the Admin main user account (the only account I have had set up since day 1).

Hello Tresean, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Did you try the downloaded copy to see if that worked for you? :)

^^^Hello, yes I tried the downloaded version as well, to no avail.

Like I said earlier, this was working fine before....it just recently stopped working. I suspect it might be something independent of the script itself. Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone experienced something similiar with the "you don't have permission" issue?

My Computer

Tresean,

As a test to see if there may be some permission issue with your account, create a new administrator account and see if it will run while logged in it.

It sounds like some sort of permissions issue.

If you are having other issues, then you might consider doing a repair install if you have a "retail" Vista installation disc.

Hi, I do not have any discs, as this is a factory built computer with Vista already installed. Is there some other type of "repair" or work-around or something that can do a scan/check or reset my permissions? I have already done sfc and chkdisk

My Computer

Tresean,

Is your only issue with doing this tutorial, or are you also having other related issues?

If this is it, then I wouldn't worry about it. Otherwise, you could try doing a system restore using a restore point dated before you had these issues to avoid possibly doing a factory recovery.

Hi Brink, Well I think I may be having another related issue. Not only will it not let me run this script, it also won't let me access other files such as my LOG files, etc. My Windows Update also refuses to let me update to SP1. I had trouble with the .NET Framework the last week and I ran the Readiness Tool? I think and a Hotfix or something, and I was able to install .NET, which in turn let me install a few other updates----which led me up to at least seeing that SP1 was ready to be downloaded....but SP1 won't install. I get the error 800F081F. Could these two be related? Or not?

My Computer

With those type of issues, it may be best to backup anything that you do not want to lose to another location, and do a factory recovery to reinstall Vista. :(
