Boot Up Time

How to See What Your Boot Up Time is in Vista

information   Information
To optimize the boot/shutdown of Windows, it is necessary to know precisely the reboot time of the computer to be able to refine its adjustments.
But rather than having the hand on a stop watch at the time of the reboot, better use this easy way, You will appreciate how simple it is to use and the precision of the result.

The relative time value will then give you a point of comparison to optimize the boot/shutdown of your computer.
Note   Note
For fun you can post your results here: ReBoot Time

EXAMPLE: ReBoot-Time dialog box
NOTE:
This is what you will see after running the VB Script file from below and when you computer finishes restarting.

ReBoot_Time.jpg
Here's How:
information   Information
In order to calculate the time of rebooting Windows, we will use a VB Script (Visual BASIC Scripting Edition). Let us learn first how it works.

The script writes a value in the registry (HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Current Version \ run) so that it can be started again when booting. Then, another value containing the time is writen in the registry when the reboot is launched. While rebooting, the script records the hour in a variable then checks if the first value containing the time exists. If so, it is then enough to compare two times in order to obtain the time of rebooting. Then, the two keys added in the registry are removed (the run key and the key where the time is stored).

1) Open your favorite text editor (notepad will do the job perfectly) and copy/paste the following script:

Code:
Option Explicit
On Error Resume Next
Dim Wsh, Time1, Time2, Result, PathFile, MsgResult, MsgA, AppName, KeyA, KeyB, TimeDiff
MsgA = "Please close all running applications and click on OK."
KeyA = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RestartTime\"
KeyB = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\RestartTime"
AppName = "ReBoot-Time"
Set Wsh = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
PathFile = """" & WScript.ScriptFullName & """"
Result = wsh.RegRead(KeyA & "Times")
if Result = "" then
MsgResult = Msgbox (MsgA, vbOKCancel, AppName)
If MsgResult = vbcancel then WScript.Quit
Wsh.RegWrite KeyA & "Times", left(Time,8), "REG_SZ"
Wsh.RegWrite KeyB, PathFile, "REG_SZ"
Wsh.Run "cmd /c Shutdown -r -t 00", false, 0
else
Wsh.RegDelete KeyA & "Times"
Wsh.RegDelete KeyA
Wsh.RegDelete KeyB
TimeDiff = DateDiff("s",Result,left(Time,8))
MsgBox "Your computer reboots in " & TimeDiff & " seconds", VbInformation, AppName
end if
wscript.Quit

2) Save the file wherever you want on the same HDD (desktop for example) as ReBoot-Time.vbs (you can choose whatever name as far as the extension is ".VBS".

You can also download the script file here:

download < Click to Download

Use of the Script:
  • Double click on the script icon if it is on your desktop or on the file if you saved it in a particular folder.
  • Close all the running applications and click the OK button in the dialog box.
  • The computer will reboot and when Windows will be ready to be used, a new dialog box will open displaying the time your computer took to reboot.
Voila!

Ok my boot time is now 46 seconds... wel it was.... cause the second time I ran the script something has happened. Now my pc hangs for about 50 seconds between the loading vista scroll thingy and the cute startup sound and windows ball display.

Sometimes its longer then other times but its always more than 30 seconds.

arghh, vista was impressing me up until now.

edit: just thought i would run the script again and with the hang its taken 114 seconds to load. seriously annoying me now.
edit2: once in vista everything seems to work fine... shut down is fast and boot to the windows scroll is normal, just after the scrol and before the desktop entry is hanging... anyways will wait to get a response, just thought I would ad as much info as possible.

Hello Grimace,

You might check the items in this tutorial to see if any of them may be the cause of your reboot slowdown.

Hope this helps,

Hello Grimace,

You might check the items in this tutorial to see if any of them may be the cause of your reboot slowdown.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I had already applied the number of processors tweak to my system and had already restarted four or five times with a noticable improvement.
I removed that tweak to test and nothing has changed.

I have barely anything loading at startup;
Windows Defender
Nvidia Drivers
Nvidia Media Player library???

That is all. I havn't changed anything. I simply ran the script once, and then ran it a second time to check for consistency and the second time it hung and took 121 seconds to load.
Now the hang is totally inconsistant, last night it did a short one and only lagged for about 15 seconds, but usually it's well over 30.

I also noticed that for some unknown reason in my 'Power options' under the High performance settings in advanced under PCI Express the 'Link State Power Managment' was set to maximum savings??? I never changed this and I am sure that the high performance tab would not have this as default.

Anyways I have set that back to off, and it made absolutely no difference.

I am trying to trace it back to the nvidia drivers as they may have been corrupted some how (a msytery to me if it is the case). I do want to note that just after the windows loading scroll the monitor does flick off and on after about a second and then the lag is present.

All the items in that tutorial are irrelevant to me.

I will be removing and reloading the nvidia drivers shortly.

My Computer

OK removal of nvidia phsyx and drivers sees the lag dissapear, computer is a touch slower to boot, but no lag.

Re installed the drivers, and wham the lag is there again. I have had these drivers since I installed vista and have had no troubles until yesterday.

Cheers
Anthony

Grimace,

Have you already tried the 180.48 driver version? I do not seem to have any problems with it. Maybe it will work as well for you.

I have the 180.48 drivers but I was not aware they were beta?

Its also irrelevant now as it seems the driver are not the problem, the last load without them was prob just a coincedence to only lag for a short period of time (about ten seconds), cause I have removed them all again and still have the lag.

I think i am just going to remove 6gb of ram and start again with another fresh install. The time I spent trouble shooting last night and this morning, could have been spent doin the reinstall.

So unless something changes by the time I get home, this arvo it will be vista install round 2, round 1 lasted 5 days :huh:. I was really happy with it for 4 of them :).

Cheers
Anthony

EDIT: The 180.48 driver I have are no longer beta, they were released the day i installed vista :D

My Computer

LOL, my mistake Anthony. I was thinking of the 180.43 beta version instead. :o

You might also check the Event Viewer logs, or enable boot logging from the Advanced Boot Options screen, then read the C:\Windows\System32\ntbootlog.txt file in Safe Mode to see if anything stands out in there causing this problem.

I hope it gets worked out.

I did do the boot log and this morning - I checked it out and there is three drivers that have a 'did not load' listing;
NDproxy.sys
kdbhid.sys
srv.sys
(the above are off the top of my head and may be slightly incorrect)

All three also have a 'loaded' listing as far as I can recall, so unsure as to why it also states a not loaded listing.

My format fingers are twitchin' yo ! ! !

Ha seems my luck with vista will never end, formated afew days ago, installed sp1 this morning, havnts touched anything and this afternoon its got a massive lag again.

This is the 5th (4 different computer setups) time I have tried to use my vista ultimate since I bought it back when it was first released and every time I go back to XP thinking why the >insert bad words here< did I bother trying that again...

Looks like nuthing has changed, hopefulyl Windows 7 is worth it, definately wont be buying it until I get a good idea of its ups and downs.

So far vista has been all downs for me. Sorry guys but I am out of here yet again, might see you all in 6 motnhs when i try again.

Cheers
Anthony

p.s. thanks for the help brink, good forum you have here! it will thrive for aslong as people attempt to use what is in my opinion microsofts latest ME :(

My Computer

Anthony, you can take a look around at the Windows 7 Forums to see what and how Windows 7 is running so far.

I hope it goes better for you the next time.

I'm having the same issue as grimace. I was at a 76 secs, applied some tweaks and now it's pausing between the loading bar and the orb. I can't get it to go below 120+
Obviously one of my changes was not for the best :p

Time to trawl through the boot log :rolleyes:

At least it's no longer as bad as this: :)

Mate all i can say for advice is don't do anything... the lags has been present for 3 days now and just now I started my pc and it loaded faster than ever (2 passes of the loading bar) then a split second pause to the orb and instantly in windows... would have been about 35seconds max....

I am too afraid to turn the thing off now, incase it just dissapoints... Funny thing I havent changed anything. I actually installed adobe reader and then removed the speed launcher from the registry but that was why i just shut down and rebooted. Never had adobe on here before so it simply can't be from that.

Haha, we will see what happens next time i restart. I have had a few drinks today so maybe it is all in my head. :zip::o
