hi i have a problem with one of my vista machines, windows is almost a fresh install because it did came wiped, all the drivers/software are installed like when it was factory but i noticed that when i leave it idle for some time it starts using 50%cpu, task manager shows nothing using that much but process explorer shows that interupts is using it and i have to restart to make it stop doing that, apart from that the machine is perfect and very fast, i will prefer not re installing windows unless its necessary

My CPU usage always varies between say 4 and 50 % with spikes to 100 just sitting here with the only thing running is my browser and internet radio. The hard drive is always reading and writing and that impacts CPU usage. If it's not a steady 50%, I wouldn't worry about it. Could be a hardware or software interrupt and they're tough to chase down.

Maybe try setting Windows Update to "Never check for updates," click OK, then restart PC.

I guess you're commenting to stvpls. I turned off updates long ago and did the same thing on my Win 7 a month ago.

win update is disabled and the service as well since it doesnt work (i use wusus), its seady 50 60%, but that seems to kick in after im using it for about an hour or idle fr 15 mins, i tried disabling and enabling most drivers but it doesnt go away, im sure thats an interrupts problem since i saw it on process explorer but if i need i will reinstall and install the x64 so i can use all 4gb ram, but im pretty sure its a driver issue,
at idle the pc is about 6% but others i have stay at 0%,
that problem is what is holding me from buying a battery for it since if it stays at 50 % it will discharge quicker and also it will make the pc slower to do tasks that require more than 50% cpu

Have you tried running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt? If the installation was a factory restore, then the very old factory image was quite possibly corrupt. Also, what antivirus is installed? See Vista No Longer Supported by Most Security Software (but please do not post there).

no its not factory, but i made it look like it (even the fujitsu siemens logo and support number and other in system info) since i cant find the original iso online, antivirus is norton, wich i pay every year for up to 5 pcs, it works perfect even in my xp dell so no compatibility problems, i had this problem even before installing it.
i did update some drivers few hrs ago and it doesnt seem to appear as of now, mabye it will come up again, ill let it idle for some hours to see if appears again.

I have never experienced that issue. I wonder if maybe you installed a driver so new that it doesn't properly support Vista.

If you are certain your high CPU activity is always caused by a hardware interrupt (and not by another process like the Windows host process svchost.exe) then you are likely correct that your problem is caused by a hardware or driver issue. See the MakeUseOf Win 10 article How to Fix High CPU Usage Caused by System Interrupts for some background info as well as the Sweetwater article Solving DPC Latency Issues. Unfortunately, most of the utilities recommended in those articles are no longer compatible with Vista SP2 but Resplendence still has a link <here> to an older version of their LatencyMon v5.x utility that should work with Vista SP2.

This is just an aside to your hardware interrupts, but are you referring to Torsten Wittrock's WSUS Offline Update tool, and if so what version did you use? The latest ESR v9.2.5 and v9.2.6 versions of this tool (where ESR v9.x is the extended support release for older OSs like Win XP, Vista, etc.) include the out-of-band emergency security update KB4499180 released 14-May-2019 that patches the "BlueKeep" remote desktop vulnerability CVE-2019-0708. One side-effect of this KB44999180 patch is that it will also change a Vista SP2 OS from Build 2 (6.0.6002.xxxxx) to Build 3 (6.0.6003.xxxxx). You mentioned you use a Norton AV, and while I would normally recommend that Vista SP2 users apply this patch, just be aware that it did seem to cause issues with my Norton Security Deluxe v22.15.2.22 (e.g., general system instability, black screens at boot-up that disappeared when Norton was uninstalled) so I eventually uninstalled KB44999180 and then confirmed my remote desktop / port 3389 settings were configured as described <here> to mitigate this BlueKeep remote desktop vulnerability.

You might also want to read the FAQ How to Fix Vista SP2 "Checking for Updates..." Hangs and Slow Windows Updates pinned at the top of the Windows Update board of this forum. If WSUS Offline has already patched Vista SP2 to the end of extended support (11-Apr-2017) and installed the 4 or 5 required "speed up" patches listed on page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours (KB3205638 / KB4012583 / KB4015195 / KB4015380 plus KB4014661 if IE9 is installed) then a manual Windows Update should run to completion in 5 or 10 minutes and report your system is fully patched. If you want to test if Windows Update is working now you will need to change the Startup Type of your Windows Update service wuauserv from your tweaked Disabled back to the default Automatic (Delayed Start) and re-boot (or manually start this service) before running Windows Update . If you don't want Windows Update launching automatically in the background you can leave the service enabled and just set Windows Update to Never check for updates (not recommended) at Windows Updates | Change Settings | Important Updates.

I don't think that what he's seeing is a problem. I looked at the Vista Resource Monitor all day to day. In the memory section, hard faults varied widely and memory usage was fairly constant around 62% for what I was doing (I have 4 GB and a 64 bit system). The CPU usage was up and down like a yo-yo as I noted before. As far as I know, my system is behaving the same as it was when new 12 years ago.

He noted that he couldn't get the ISO for Vista for his installation. He can get it from Ex_Brit if he likes. Sorry about this discussion which is off topic.

If you are using WSUS Offline 10.x then your Vista OS likely isn't patched to the end of extended support (11-Apr-2017) and that could be a concern. I would ensure ndis.sys, hal.dll and other system files are patched first and then see what effect that has on your system performance. If patching your OS doesn't help then you can re-run LatencyMon afterwards and see if it still suggests a BIOS update.

See my June 2017 thread End of Support for Vista in the WSUS Offline Update forum. Version 10.9.2 (rel. 19-Mar-2017) was the last update released in the v10.x series, and AFAIK v10.9.2 doesn't include the final batch of April 2017 Patch Tuesday updates for Vista SP2 that were released just prior to the end of extended support on 11-Apr-2017. After 19-Mar-2017 WSUS Offline Update was split into two different streams - v11.x for Windows 7 and higher and ESR v9.2.x for older, unsupported Windows OSs like Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2.

If your system is missing any one of the required "speed up" patches listed in STEP # 2 of the instructions at Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours [KB3205638 (rel. 13-Dec-2016) / KB4012583 (rel. 14-Mar-2017)/ KB4015195 (rel. 11-Apr-2017) / KB4015380 (rel. 11-Apr-2017) plus KB4014661 (rel. 11-Apr-2017) if IE9 is installed] Windows Updates will hang on "Checking for updates..." and consume large amounts of CPU. From the FAQ How to Fix Vista SP2 "Checking for Updates..." Hangs and Slow Windows Updates:

"There is currently a known issue on Vista SP2 computers where Windows Update can hang on "Checking for updates..." for several hours (or even days) without throwing an error message. This problem was first reported in August 2015 and these slow Windows Updates have become progressively worse over time. Extended support for Vista SP2 and IE9 ended on 11-Apr-2017 but many users have recently discovered that they still have a large backlog of available updates waiting to be installed because Windows Update has not run to completion for several months. Users who perform a clean re-install of their Vista OS will encounter these "Checking for updates..." hangs as soon as Service Pack 2 (SP2) is applied.

Assuming that Vista Service Pack 2 is already installed (check at Control Panel | System and Maintenance | System and see image below) I'd suggest that you first ensure your Vista SP2 OS is patched to at least to 11-Apr-2017 before tackling any hardware-related problems. You can do that by following the instructions on page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours . If you prefer, you could also use WSUS Offline Update v9.2.4 (rel. 23-Mar-2018, no KB4499180 patch for the BlueKeep vulnerability) or the latest v9.2.6 (rel. 08-Nov-2019, with KB4499180 and some minor tweaks for Win XP SP3 to remove a few outdated patches) and then confirm those 4 or 5 required "speed up" patches have been installed correctly at Control Panel | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates.



If you require assistance patching your Vista SP2 OS start Internet Explorer 9, go to Help | About Internet Explorer, and let us know your current Update Versions (see image below). If you have Update Versions 9.0.60 / KB4014661 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9: April 11, 2017) that would suggest that your Vista SP2 OS is already patched to 11-Apr-2017 and your Windows Update should be working correctly.

In that case, stvpls should start a thread in the Windows Updates forum. One thing stvpls has mentioned elsewhere is that his IE9 has TLS 1.1 and 1.2 enabled. (Congratulations stvpls, but Imacri may have something to say about that I'm afraid. )

Ndis.sys is a Windows system file related to Network Driver Interface System (NDIS) and is part of the interface to your network interface card (NIC) (also called your network adapter or Ethernet card). As for STHall.sys, do you have a Windows service named something like ST Screen Detection Service, and if so is it automatically started at boot-up? Can you find this STHall.sys file at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\STHall.sys? If so, right click and select Properties and see if you can find any information on the the current file version and name of the manufacturer.

Just an FYI that I used the "Browse for Product" feature on Fujitsu support site <here> (Continental Europe / English; if you prefer, Fujitso's Italian support site is located <here>) and they still have Vista-compatible certified drivers and BIOS updates available for download for the ESPRIMO Mobile D9510. Unfortunately, most of those drivers date back to 2008 or 2009. Fujitsu's automated DeskUpdate utility mentioned on that Driver tab is only available for Win 7 and higher.



In addition to patching your Vista SP2 OS, it might also be helpful if you posted a snapshot of your system software and hardware using Piriform's free Speccy utility so we have some idea of the current state of your drivers. After installation launch Speccy and allow it to collect information about your system, then go to File | Publish Snapshot and copy and paste the URL this generates (e.g., http: // speccy.piriform.com/results/xxx... as shown in the image below ) in your next reply.



If you don't want to install Speccy on your system you can download the zipped file for Speccy Portable (currently spsetup132.zip) <here> from the Softpedia site and save it to a USB thumb drive (note that Piriform removed the portable build of Speccy from their official builds page at https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/builds a few months ago), unzip the .ZIP file, and run the executable (Speccy.exe for 32-bit OSs; Speccy64.exe for 64-bit OSs) from the thumb drive.

Windows Defender: Enabled (Why? You haven't updated it since 07/04/2019 Definition 1.291.1271.0)
Internet Explorer Version: 9.0.8112.16421 (Hasn't been patched in years, so hope you never use it)
Running: Terminal Services (see Mitigations at CVE-2019-0708 since you rejected KB4499180)
Stopped Apple Mobile Device (iTunes versions old enough for Vista can no longer even sign in)

A large majority is just Windows update history, which might be all that Imacri really wants to see. No list of installed programs.
