Help with vista please - D: Drive query

:( Oh No I can hear you shouting in the background ' not that woman again'. Well I am sorry but I have another small / big /awkward dilemma:

I also know I should not keep posting on this thread but do forgive me this once.

Microsoft Windows Updates: I attempted to download 2 quite large downloads, the downloads ran OK - Installtion was confirmed. When I reoboted the system it crashed and I had to do a safe restore as windows would not boot up normally.

Now for my problem: Windows update ticked one as installed and one as failed. This is not an issue as I can get them both direct from Microsoft if needed.

The issue is that (Well I think) because the reboot failed, neither of the updates are in Control Panel for me to uninstall and try again. They just did not make it that far. They are on my system as I did a search and found a VERY large number of files.......... Is there an easy way to delete the 2 installs? I am relying on your expertise here. I can sit for hours manually put it each file and folder in the recycle bin but I am hoping there is an easier soloution?

What ever you do you must remain a volunteer, please do not let me put you off.

Kindest Regards..... Andrea

Andrea,
First please do not be hesitant about coming to the Forum for help, that is why we are here. You are welcome to come as often as you like. In fact, I enjoy helping you because I can tell that you appreciate everything that we are trying to do for you.
Now for the matter at hand.
This tutorial has a video that shows how to uninstall
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/92402-windows-update-uninstall.html
If the update that you want is not on the list (as shown in the Video) it is not installed. You will receive it, again, in short while so that you may install it.
If it is on the list and for some reason it cannot uninstall, you can use system restore (remember that feature) to uninstall.
PLEASE come back as often as you like, for any reason
Rich

If you have problems installing several large downloads. Try doing a few at a time. Look at the size of the updates, bunch a few small ones together for installation, install the larger ones alone. Hope this helps.
Set your updater to notirfy and not install. With this setting you know what you are getting, can decide not to install all and can install a few at a time. That is how I install.

Thank you, well I am in safe mode on my daughters laptop, this is my PC I am using. I am going to do a system restore before I do anything else on the lap-top. I am at a loss as to what happened because the laptop was perfect until the updates. However I have to be honest and say I know little about Safe mode, once I have restored, should I exit and let the system boot normally or can i install updates in safe mode. Sorry to sound so dim but I have never been in this situation before.

Kindest Regards :)

Try to do the system restore in regular mode. In safe mode there will be no provision to go back, if it does not work out.

I know I said I would not post on this thread, but just to let you know I never got to bed. I watched the video, checked files, ran chkdsk and all the usual and more and more updates were arriving from Microsoft all the time. I soon became alarmed and have looked through the file system and error log. My conclusion as to why I was having the problems with the updates saying they run and then not appearing on the program list has to be a 'VIRUS' or I have been Hijacked.

I am in a bit of a spin as you can imagine. I am doing a system restore to before the program errors and then I will run McAfee and Ccleaner and hope for the best.

I will live through it I am sure. But I am convinced having looked at the error log and some of the files, they bear no resemblance to any of our programs or 'official looking Microsoft updates'

Take care:sick:

Should I just buy a gun?

You did right to post here, since these problems are all related. I suggested that you post in a new thread, if you had an unrelated question.
There is no need to worry, there are safety mechanisms. Worse case scenario, we can set you back to the way you were the day that you brought the computer home. It would then be your responsobility to install your stuff again and do all the updates. We are not there, however. I wait for the results of your anti virus/malware tests.

Thank you, as you know they take hours to run. McAfee has already found 4 infected files in the first ten minutes. Somebody really upset my system yesterday. I am always so careful what I download and where from. I will report back later. Enjoy your day.

 Well it is not good news really I am afraid::shock:

1. This is what McAfeee found:

2 viruses affecting Java: Exploit-CVE2010-0840 and Exploit-CVE2011-3544
McAfee has removed the viruses but my system is crawling about like a lame duck.

The viruses have taken over four files all beginning Jar-cache

Jar_cache xxxxxxxxxxxetc.temp (cannot type all the numbers)

I have scanned the system and it has found numerous issues. I know this means a Factory re-set. This I have encountered before so I am familiar with this and how to do it. Now last time I didnt have any back-up discs. In this instance I do Have a set of discs, but please do not Roll about on the floor laughing out loud :D wouldnt have a clue what to do with them! A factory reset doesnt worry me really but I would like to use the discs if possible.

What can I say .......... these things happen

Hey, not to worry. We all had to begin learning somewhere.
This is what you do, set the computer to boot from a DVD
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/205005-boot-priority-change.html
Then just put the DVD in the drive and watch. Its automatic. You may have to push a key to continue etc, but its easy.
You are going to lose your stuff. I am afraid to tell you how to save it, because they may be infected.
Does the Anti Virus give you an option to remove the virus?
