I had Vista Ultimate x64 installed on one of my drives, but now it's gone. I miss it dearly as the Ultimate version was the best OS MS ever put out., it had everything.

I've got several operating systems on this machine. I run Vista about two days a week, Win 7 about 4 days, Win 10 maybe one day. Seven's my workhorse obviously for downloading, web browsing, CD burning, system maintenance, and so on. Vista's the backstop, if something gets screwed up in Win 7 or Win 10 and I have to revert to a backup. Plus, there are a handful of programs which run on Vista but not on 7 and 10. And of course, some things run on 7 and 10 but not on Vista, which is why I don't use it every day.

I like the looks of Vista, I guess I'd say. I'm comfortable with it. The sign-in display and WordPad and Windows Explorer and the Start Menu and even Internet Explorer 9 are like old friends, always recognized, always appreciated.

I agree with your last paragraph.

Note that most programs can be run in Win 10 by changing the compatibility mode of their respective installation files to the appropriate OS. It also helps to run the installation file as the administrator.

I am still with Vista, it is so easy to use, I recently purchased a new DELL laptop with W10 which I have not got used to yet, it has 500G solid state drive and loads up in just a few seconds but I keep returning to Vista, the biggest problem that I have with Vista is that at some point in the last 12mths or so WMP stopped working and I could not repair but I do try to repair from time to time but without success, Yesterday I did a google search and decided to try “Restoro” so I installed and ran the recommended scan the result was a host of defects which unfortunately I failed to record, I clicked the fix button and got the pop up that it would have to be purchased before any repairs so I cancelled and thought here we go again, then a few hours later I clicked the start button and then the WMP button and was stunned to see it had loaded. I tried again this morning and it is still working so it must have due to RESTORO

Hello mich,

I recommend that you spend more time getting used to your Win10 laptop for reasons I have already given on July 8. Are you aware that Microsoft's Windows Defender Is Now One of the Best Antivirus Apps in the World? The latest version included with Win10 that is (certainly not the ancient Vista version); hopefully you haven't disabled it by installing nagware.

You evidently did not scan Restoro with Malwarebytes before running it:

MB Restoro.JPG

I suggest that you now run a Malwarebytes threat scan on your Vista laptop.

I'm glad to hear that WMP is working now. I mostly use VLC myself. Playing back media files offline is a safe use for your old Vista laptop.

Hi Vistaar,
No I have not installed nagware, I have been using Ashampoo burning studio and Kaspersky free which seem to be working well up to now, the main trouble with my new laptop (DELL) is that despite being on the lowest setting for sensitivity the touch pad is hyper sensitive you only have to let the pointer pause for a split second and it loads what ever it is on, this is most frustrating and is a known bug for new users it is not a MS problem. I did not scan Restoro before using on Vista, I have removed it from computer, I did run a Kaspersky scan after removal and it showed no threats etc.

Why do you recommend me to run a Malwarebytes scan on my laptop? :)

...I did run a Kaspersky scan after removal and it showed no threats etc. Why do you recommend me to run a Malwarebytes scan on my laptop?
Because antivirus vendors traditionally don't think it's their business to rescue users from potentially unwanted programs that they install themselves, whereas Malwarebytes became popular by making it their business. I would be interested in knowing what version of Kaspersky Free you are using on Vista. Kaspersky removed Vista from their system requirements in February 2018, whereas you mentioned installing Avast (which is the brand I currently use on Vista) in April 2018. Of course Kaspersky might nevertheless work reasonably well on Vista for all I know.

Updated version of Kaspersky free 19.0.0 installed 24/7/19 this was an automatic update from Kaspersky.
I have run various programs Avast, AVG etc.

On my laptop W10, I am running AVG free, I will follow your advice and install Malwarebytes.
