Lost HD for CDs

I suppose we need to know just what isn't working. DVD versus CD and music versus data. Also the only real way to eliminate windows as the culprit is as I suggested. Using a different drive in that computer and preferably using that drive in a known good computer. An alternative would be to run linux on that computer from a live disk or USB drive. Until then all we can do is speculate however optical drives aren't very expensive.

Just to be clear.
The audio and data CD will not work on my Vista PC a DVD does work in WMP and VLC on the same PC.

The audio and data CD work in my old lap top XP.

I am expecting an external/portable optical drive from Dell today or tomorrow I can then try it on Vista/XP/W10 and see what happens.

Thanks for the clarification. Did you try the registry edit in regards to the audio CD? When you put in a data disc and right click on it in Windows Explorer, you should be able to see its contents by right clicking on it and choosing Explore.

@wither3, No I have not done reg edit as yet but I will do over the weekend, The ext optical drive arrived and works OK on W10 and Vista it had to install "driver?"on Vista so it was working through a USB but played perfectly in Vista WMP,
:)

I just have another thought before I do the reg edit tomorrow:
I do have the original DVDs that came with the PC dated May 2008 would any of these repair WMP? Just a thought.

  1. Drivers and utilities-device drivers-diagnostics and utilities.
  2. AMDtm Graphic drivers-device drivers for reinstalling graphics hardware
3. Operating Reinstallation DVD. 32bit service pack 1

My Computer

I don't think any of us consider WMP to be the problem. I didn't look but I think you can still download WMP 11.

Run regedit.exe to open the Registry Editor

If you are antsy about editing the registry, click on File, Export. Export the registry to a location you can remember. This may take a few minutes. You could also simply set a system restore point.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class.

Open the Class key. Find this-

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Open it. It should show your drive.

In the results that appear on the window on the right, locate the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values. Note that both values may not be present.

If present, right-click or tap-and-hold on UpperFilters and choose Delete.

Choose Yes to the "Deleting certain registry values could cause system instability. Are you sure you want to permanently delete this value?" question.

Repeat with the LowerFilters value, if present.

Note: You might also see an UpperFilters.bak or LowerFilters.bak value but you do not need to delete either of these.

Close the Registry Editor.

Restart your computer.

Retry a CD in WMP.

You have to expand system first.

I finally worked out how to do it but got stuck in 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. I get the following window no upper or lower filters.

4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318..JPG

I tried clicking on 0000 and 0001 but they showed the following. Again no sign of filters. So where am I going wrong?

I go back to my original questions. Have you checked another drive in that computer and have you tried that drive in another computer? Alternately you can get a bootable version of linux like knoppix or ubuntu and attempt to use the drive. This is very important to determine if the issue is with the drive or Windows. That's why I've brought this up 3 times now. I can't really help you if you don't do at least one of those and preferably all of them.

Helpful gurus may not be aware that sfc /scannow found corrupt files that it was unable to fix on mich's factory-restored Vista laptop with WMP problems in July 2018. A program that Malwarebytes regards as a PUP was tried in an effort to fix WMP in August 2019. If mich is dissatisfied with his Windows 10 laptop, then a clean install from a Vista ISO is probably called for. If mich prefers to try another factory restore first, then sfc /scannow should be the first order of business afterwards because the factory image is likely corrupt.

@Vistaar
Vistaar, Despite Dells best efforts (1 live technician + 2 virtual technicians) could not fix my new W10 laptop so have replaced it with a new later version laptop which is humming along just perfectly. Great service from Dell.

If the external DVD drive plays audio on the Vista machine that would indicate that there is probably an issue with the internal DVD drive however without at least testing a live linux disk or trying the DVD drive in another it's hard to be definitive on that. I strongly suggest that you try running linux on your computer and testing the drive from that. Try Linux with a Live Linux CD or DVD

um there is no standalone WMP11 download for Vista, wither 3. it's already integrated onto Vista and can only be updated thru Vista OS updates
