Ah, not quite mate. Two 4870/5770's will not out perform a GTX 295. They will be close to matching it though.

yes, but i am looking at two medium cards for the same price as one good one, and the equivalent nvidia card price to 2x5770's is a 285. so i take it that the 5770's won't beat a 285 either?

For the price of a 285, you may as well just get a 5850.

yes, but you thought i should get one 5850 instead of two 5770's crossfired, and i think a 5770 crossfired would beat a 5850 if they beat a 5870 on a couple of occasions.

IMO if you need 5870 performance, go with the 5870

consider that with 2 5770s, you really have nowhere to go in regards to upgrades (ok...i suppose you could triple them if that setup works on your motherboard, but...it dont leave much room for improvement )

to me it's silly to use 2 GPUs instead of just 1 if they are roughly the same performance, unless you currently already have 1 5770 and need more power.

i'm pretty sure one 5870 is more desirable than CFX 5770s anyway... (4870 > 5770, and 1 5870 > 2 4870s on average), and when the 5870 gets cheaper, or games released in a year or two need more power, a second 5870 seems like an easy upgrade decision compared to 3 5770s or completely scrapping them for a better dual GPU solution.

and anyway, there seems to be no 5800's available on the novatech website. i will keep the 5770 crossfire configuration until i get the money and see if the 5870 is available. thanks for the advise

i have been swapping products around lately, and i found that if i want one hd5870, then another to up the power, it requires 4 6-pin connectors. more money to the psu then. which means something pricey will have to go down, and that was my processor. so i got this one (can always overclock to the 965 standards ). but my question is that will it be compatible with these c7's?
otherwise i will have to go to the 1333 mhz ram.

ok......you dont need 1000w to run 2x 5870s , a good 800w PSU will be plenty (still probably too much, though you will need between 40 - 60A on the 12v rail for CFX 5870s)

in regards to the RAM, im sure as long as your board supplies the correct voltage (1.6v) the sticks will downclock to 1333mhz, you'll have to OC them yourself (depending on the mobo)

to run 2 5870;s you need four 6 pin connectors. I had originally only had two six pins on my . and what i meant by 'cheapest i could find for the price', which was terrible grammar , was that it was the cheapest that had four 6 pins to utilize the crossfire .

overclockers uk is a cheaper site to get products from -
i chose a phenom 955 3.2ghz(with dirt 2 ) and managed to choose a 5850. to overlclock that 955 to the same and maybe over the ghz as a 965, i chose this MONSTER of an air cooler...Coolermaster V10 TEC Hybrid CPU Cooler (Socket 940/AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1366) [] Cooling CPU Coolers
