Repair Install For Vista

How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista

information   Information
This will allow you to repair your Vista installation and keep all of your personal user account files, settings, and programs. You will be performing a Upgrade Install from within your currently running Vista.

You will have to use the exact same Vista installation media type that you currently have installed.

Note   Note

  • You will not be able to do a upgrade install in Safe Mode.
  • You must have Retail Full or Upgrade Vista installation DVD to do this. Some people have had problems with a Full version letting them do a upgrade install though.
  • A OEM (retail version) Vista installation DVD that you buy at a store and does not come with the computer are usually the same as a regular retail (full or upgrade) Vista installation DVD, but have a OEM license (product key number) instead of a retail license (product key number).
  • If you have a OEM Recovery Vista installation DVD that came preinstalled with your OEM brand computer instead, then it will most likely only be a clone of the hard drive with Vista allowing you to only do a clean install with it instead. These OEM computers often have a Recovery D:\ partition that does the same thing as the OEM Recovery Vista installation DVD.
  • If you have a Anytime Upgrade Vista installation DVD, then you will not be able to do this.
  • The Vista installation DVD that you use to do the repair (upgrade) install must be the same or newer version of Vista with the Windows Updates and SP level than what you currently have installed. If the DVD is a older version, then you cannot do a repair (upgrade) install with it.
  • IF YOU HAVE THE VISTA SP1 INSTALLED:
    • This will not work if you have SP1 installed unless your Vista installation DVD includes the SP1, or you create a Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD (See below). When the SP1 is installed, it will give Vista a newer version number than what is on the original Vista installation DVD.
    • You can only do a Upgrade install if the currently installed Vista is the same or older version than what is on the Vista installation DVD.
    • To create a Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD to use to do a Repair (upgrade) install, see: How to Create a Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD. Note that this does not always work to use for a Repair install.
    • Another option is to uninstall the Vista SP1, then run the Repair install and install the SP1 again afterwards. To uninstall the SP1, see: Microsoft Help and Support: How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step
  • IF YOU HAVE THE VISTA SP2 INSTALLED:
    • This will not work if you have SP1 and SP2 installed unless your Vista installation DVD includes SP2.
    • To create a Vista SP2 slipstream installation DVD to use to do a Repair (upgrade) install, see: How to Slipstream Vista SP2. Note that this does not always work to use for a Repair install.
  • Be sure to backup any important data you have, just in case something goes wrong during installation. You may need to reinstall some of your drivers. You do not want to do this if you are dual booting with XP and Vista was not installed as the primary boot drive. It can cause XP to not startup anymore.
Tip   Tip
If you are have installation error problems, then see:
warning   Warning
If you changed the default location of the Program Files or Programs Files (x86) folder, then you will need to change it back to the C: drive, and change any shortcuts that pointed to the other location to also point to the C: drive before doing a repair install.

ITEMS THAT WILL BE RESET TO DEFAULT:

Here's How:

Note   Note

  • If Vista is still not working properly afterwards, then a Clean Install would be recommended.
  • You may need to reinstall some of your drivers after the Repair (upgrade) install.
  • You will not be able to do a upgrade install in Safe Mode.

1. While logged in Vista as an administrator, insert the Vista installation DVD into the DVD drive, or connect a Vista installation USB thumb/key drive.

WARNING: Do not boot the computer and run the Vista installation DVD from boot. A upgrade install will not work this way.

Note   Note
If you do not have a Vista with SP1 installation DVD/USB, then you can download an official Vista with SP1 ISO file here: Microsoft: Vista Direct Download Links, and use Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with the ISO to do the repair install.

2. Click on Install Now to start the upgrade. (See screenshot below)

NOTE: If AutoPlay does not load the Vista setup screen, then open your DVD drive in Computer and click on the Setup file.
Install_now.jpg
3. If you want Vista to check for updates during the installation, then click on that to select it. (See screenshot below)

NOTE: It will install faster if you select Do not get the latest updates for installation. You can install them later through Windows Update.
Updates.jpg
4. Do not type in a product key. (See screenshot below)

WARNING: If you do type in the same activated product key that you already have installed, then you can end up in Reduced Functionality Mode.

5. Leave the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online box unchecked.

6. Click on Next.
Product_Key.jpg
7. Click on the No button for the Do you want to enter your product key now? prompt. (See screenshot below)
Product_Key_Confirmation.jpg
8. Select which edition of Vista you have. (See screenshot below)

9. Check the I have selected the edition of Windows that I purchased box and click on Next. (See screenshot below)
Windows_Version.jpg
10. Click on the Upgrade option. (See screenshot below)
Upgrade.jpg
11. Follow any instructions left until Vista is through installing and has rebooted to the final welcome screen on the Vista desktop.

12. Remove the Vista installation DVD.

13. Check to see if any files are missing. If so look in the bolded files shown in step 14 below to see if they are in there. You can then just copy them back.

14. Run Disk Cleanup.
A) If listed, check Files discarded by Windows upgrade. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: These will be the leftover upgrade files, C:\Windows.old, C:\$INPLACE.~TR and C:\$WINDOWS.~Q, that did not get copied over. If any personal username files are missing, it would be in these folders.
B) Click on OK to delete it.
Disk_Cleanup.jpg

15. Now all you need to do is to activate Vista.
A) Right click on Computer (Start Menu) and click on Properties, or open the Control Panel (Classic View) and click on the System icon.
B) Scroll down a bit and click on: Activate Windows Now. (See screenshot below)

That's it,
Shawn

Andrew I must admit that I am stumped on why it does not work for you then. I still do not seem to have any problems with running it on my system.

Other that a clean install, you might try doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before the problem to see if it can fix it.

Sorry,
Shawn

Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately there was no restore points listed that would've been helpful. I think that's because it had probably been 8 month, at least, since I had rebooted. I've been trying to crack most of my problems one at a time and things are starting to look up. I may just do a clean install anyway, I guess it's just time. Thanks again.

Hey!! your tutorial worked, but I do have one question on the disk clean up I didnt get anything called Files discarded by Windows upgrade. There is something called: System error memory dump files, is that what I am supposed to check? Anyways my chkdsk works now, so Im happy. Thanks for all your help, and all the work you put into these tutorials.

Hi MarryPoppins,

System error memory dump files is not from the upgrade. It is basically data stored when Vista last had a Stop Error (blue screen) used to try and determine what caused the Stop Error. It is safe to clean in Disk Cleanup since you fixed the problem by doing a repair install.

So I did this, and initially it worked as you can see from my previous comment. Now I'm getting the same sfc and chkdsk problems that I was getting before my Repair install. Does this mean I need to do a clean install? or is it more likely something Windows update automatically installed that I should just do a system restore and go before the updates were installed? Or do I need to do the Repair install again (because last time I did not get the files discarded by upgrade in the disk cleanup)?

MarryPoppins,

It can be from recently installed drivers, pograms, Windows Updates, etc... , or from file corruption.

I would recommend that you do a clean install again, and install the latest driver versions afterwards. It would most likely be a quicker and easier fix. :(

Sorry,
Shawn

Hello Brink,
again the problem with chkdsk that do not perform on startup. I have purchased my laptop 2 months ago and the reseller did not give me any windows vista DVD or any drivers DVD. I created my own recovery DVD from the computer itself.
What can i do now to perform the chkdsk to the C drive.

I can not boot up into Vista Home Premium 64bit due to a blue screen that comes up after my desktop shows up with all of its icons. "Registry error" is the title of the blue screen. Even if I use MSConfig and select "Diagnostic Startup" to boot up with "bare bones" drivers and services and minimal processes during startup, I get this blue screen. Vista boots up into safe mode just fine. I can not perform a "start up repair" with the Vista install DVD because it says "no problems detected with Vista start up". So that means if I am to do this repair/upgrade install, it will have to be done from Vista's Safe Mode. Will this still work as described from within Safe Mode?

Hi I'm new to the forums, but, my sole reason for being here is because of a near impossible problem I have experienced with my Vista Home Premium laptop by HP. I've tried many of the error check commands through command prompt to repair my computer but no luck.

Up until this past week, my vista has been experiencing "COM Surrogate" problems while browsing my videos. At first, I thought of it as nothing until the problem just pops up every so often. I hit "close program" and it doesn't bother me anymore if I close the folder with the said videos. I tried fixing it with some suggestions around the internet such as installing the latest divx and what not but no luck still.

THEN my computer periodically stops starting up. To be more exact, I turn it on.
Bios->blinking _ on top for a milisecond->windows start up screen (which is black and contains the green loading bars). At that point, stops right there. It will never boot past that point to the welcome/login screen and just keeps rolling the green bars while the processor has clearly stopped processing data.

Now, launch startup repair and tells me to use system restore. Sure, so I rollback to the earliest point and bam I can start it up. But, the problem keeps occuring so that everytime I initiate a full shutdown, I'd have to rollback. Now that trick has not worked for me. So now I spent about 3 days scouring forum after forum to find a way to recover my computer.

I've tried sfc /scannow command but that would not repair my OS and the CBS log keeps stating access denied. I have yet to find a fix for this.

chckdisk (forgot the actual function) does EDIT:not find any irregularities that I could discern, but I could be wrong.

My hard drive and ram seem to be working because I did run the memory tool and what not so the hardware seems to not be the problem.

I have also acquired a recovery disk neotechnologies created which seems to be a success for most users who get it to run. Currently, all I have to initiate repairs is this disk and a partition which wouldn't let me create the recovery disk in the first place (might be related to my problem) which I tried only a few days ago. Probably step 1 of my problems.

So my possible solutions are: a repair install, clean install (last resort), or take it to a computer shop (the last last resort).

Now I hope to rely upon the first two, and if there are any other solutions I would like to know. I have also not tried contacting HP yet.

My questions are if I "install" with the neotechnologies disk, would it require a format of my hard drive which I would rather avoid. As for the repair install, can I do it with the neotechnologies disk?

The OS is Vista Home Premium 32bit HP with recovery Partition. I believe it is SP1

Thank you for any help you can provide and if this is the wrong spot to post this, sorry in advance. I need to get my laptop running again before I go back up to college, but, preferably I would like to keep my files. Thx again!

Hello Elvenazn, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm afraid that I am not familiar with the Neotechnologies recovery disk. If it creates a clone of your hard drive, then you will lose what you currently have to be replaced with what you had at the time the clone was made. If is nothing but a recovery disk, then it may only be good for repairs or diagnostics and not for installing Vista. You will need to check with that program to see if it can.

Anything you get from HP or from your recovery partition to install Vista will only do a clean install.

From the problems that you have listed, it may be easier to do a clean install instead if you are able to backup anything you do not want to lose.

Wish I could help more,
Shawn

This is a little old as the last post is 2 weeks ago.
Unfortunantly this tutorial while great information doesn't seem to fit my problem but I have a little tip to add in regards to the CBS.LOG and access denied.

If you copy this file (right click, copy) and paste (right click, paste) to a unprotected location such as Documents folder or even Desktop you can open it and read the information.

Hi there,

I followed your steps all the say to the end. It got to the screen where it asks if you want to install updates. I answered only to install important updates. Then, it goes to a second screen asking for the area of the world ....EST..., then it goes to a window with a start button. I click the start button, and it tries to restart then goes to the background when the login comes up, and nothing. It just sits there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Your Vista installation may be beyond repair, and a clean install will be needed to fix it.

Sorry, :(
