Vista Codec Pack - 32bit & 64bit Media Player Codecs

Just FYI I found that I had to disable McAfee VirusScan to install these as it decided there were a whole bunch of malware in the renderer.

The good news is that, once installed OK, my Media Player stopped closing unexpectedly, in that so familar and annoying Windows fashion, when playing certain DVD's.

I had tried making exceptions for Windows Media Player in DEP etc. to no avail. These codecs were the answer.

I overrode Mcafee, I hope that was okay......

I'm still having issues that my audio output device is not installed.

In the Media Player Classic error could not render some of the pins in the graph, you may not have the needed codecs or filters installed on the system (isn't that what we just installed??).

In device mgr. it shows under sound, video and game controllers the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC with the exclamation point.

I have updated driver files (I had correct ones). I tried to update software. I uninstalled and rebooted and still no luck. I downloaded all suggested.

This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I checked for a solution and got: "could not load driver software"

I checked services msc windows audio is automatic and started.

I also used registry editor on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Audiosrv

and in the DependOnService remove all entries except RpcSs and then restart your computer. I
For this I deleted MMCSS, should I put it back?

Dell Dimension E521 Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio I'm supposed to have Dell A525 30 watt 2.1 stereo speakers with subwoofer which I don't see listed in device mgr.
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit edition with all updates installed.
I'm not technical but this is the longest I've ever taken to find a solution.

Thanks for any advice.

I got my own answer. It seems the speakers weren't listed and while they say they are Dell's they are really Sigmatel and weren't listed. On the Dell support site there was an audio update that I downloaded for Sigmatel and now a new codec appears which gives me issues with Call of Duty but at least my sound works.

I am trying to get FLAC files to play with Media Player 11 on Vista. I have installed the latest 32 bit and 64 bit codecs. I can now play all FLAC files but many of them sound distorted/scratchy---others play perfectly fine. The files that sound distorted, do play fine with Media Monkey, so this leads me to believe that Media Player is not using the proper codec? I would apprecaite help to troubleshoot this further. Thanks!

Answer: As it turned out the graphic equalizer in Media Player was causing the distortion. Turned it off and the distortion went away... Very surprised that the slight boost across the entire audio frequency range would cause that. I suppose it could also be due to the relatively 2.1 channel speaker set up I have...:o

My Computer

I uninstalled prior Shark007s codecs and installed the latest yesterday.

Now Windows Media Player version 11.0.6002.18065 plays everything but MP3s. lol. I load up any mp3 at any bitrate and get a millisecond of audio, a bit of pink noise, and then nothing: null audio. The file, though, is still playing; the slider bar works. There are no error messages, either, so Vista is assuming everything's fine and dandy.

This meant something's wrong with my codec install, so I uninstalled both the 64 and 32 and then reinstalled both. I rebooted. I opened up an mp3. Same thing happened.

And my VLC Media Player works fine with all mp3s, as does ITunes and my Windows Media Player Classic Homecinema.

Oh, and the weird thing is that the initial install of the new stuff worked fine on MP3 after the first install of the new codecs. I shut off the computer overnight and something happened between then and this morning.

Restore point, here I come. This is the first time I've ever had to use restore for something not involving a virus. I'm a little disappointed.

Restore worked. Everything seems to be fine.

For reference's sake, the only WMP plug-ins I have are the Psychedelia Viz Pack and the Viewpoint Media Player plug-in installed.

How do you uninstall codecs?

Uninstall the codec pack using control panel :)

Using what on the control panel? This is my control panel. It does not say uninstall codecs anywhere.

The latest Vista Codec package is v6.8.1 (10/26/2014) from Majorgeeks and combines both 32bit & 64bit packages.
No need to download separate 32bit and 64bit packages anymore.

wow your wireless network is slow and perhaps outdated.
I can download the latest Vista Codec Pack (which is recently v7.1.0) on AT&T's WiFi network in less than 5 minutes (I have a 3Mbps DSL connection).

sad news for Vista users :(

last version of the Vista Codecs pack is 7.2.0 (released back in mid-2017) and is only available from Majorgeeks; the creator no longer has the Vista Codecs pack listed on its web site and is no longer supported by the creator
