Solved WinVista HomePremium-X86 (SP1) Reinstallation Question

Last week I downloaded a 2.9 GB file named "WinVista_HomePremium-X86(SP1)[.ISO].iso)" from archive.org. Here is a link to what I downloaded (Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 x86 : Microsoft : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive just in case the link doesn't work for you). The file was uploaded by "shermanzuki" in February of 2018. It is pretty far down (8 or 9 screens) in the list of files.

I burned the file on a DVD and verified it as part of the burn. It verified okay. Then put the DVD away for future use. However, I'm not sure if I should have put something else on the DVD when I burned it. Would you happen to know what that might be? I've spent an hour searching around for it but can't seem to find it.

i never burned a CD or DVD with an OS, however i did it with USB thumbdrive and i had to use RUFUS that basically "unzips" the ISO and puts it in the USB, i dont know but i think you had to "unzip" the iso with winrar or something else and then burn the contents in the DVD, maybe im wrong but maybe im not

If you burnt the .iso onto the DVD and not simply copied the iso to the dvd, the DVD now has a fully operational setup of vista

I still suggest checking with S1W2 to see if he'll give you the .iso which has all the updates up to the EOL. No sense in having an SP1 disc.

Who is S1W2? If I can obtain an ISO copy of Vista Home Premium x86 with SP2 I'll burn that (providing that it works with my original Product Code, that is.

I don't see my post where I provided a link to a thread (can't find it again) where you could have asked S1W2 for the appropriate ISO. I PM'd him a few minutes ago to see if he can help you out.

Thank you for your help. I did find S1W2 elsewhere in the long (168 pages and counting) thread in this forum. After reading through the various posts my mind just turned to mush. "Mind overload!"

Hi skeezix:

I don't believe that SIW2 is still hosting their "full" slipstreamed Vista SP2 ISO (i.e., with SP1 + SP2 + all ~ 220 security updates released prior to end of support on 11-Apr-2017) on their MEGA archive. Ex_Brit hasn't been active in this forum since Dec 2021 but if you send them a private message they might still be able to provide their "regular" slipstreamed Vista SP2 ISO (with SP1 + SP2).

If you've already reinstalled Vista SP1 and re-activated your license (see the slui.exe 4 method in Step 2 / Option 2 of How to Activate Vista Normally and by Phone Activation) it might be easier for you to manually install Service Pack 2 and then use the Dism++ utility to patch Vista SP2 back to 11-Apr-2017. If you aren't familiar with Dism++ see SIW2's 02-Dec-2021 instructions in post # 3186 of Vista ISO Download. The GitHub home page for Dism++ is <here>.

Standalone .exe installers for 32-bit and 64-bit Service Pack 2 (KB948465, released May 2009) are still available for download from the Microsoft Update Catalog at https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Vista KB948465. See my post # 104 in Why SP1 May Not Be Available For You And How To Get It for more information about the SP1 and SP2 standalone .exe installers.

I know Imacri know this but, just for clarification, the ISO from Ex_Brit doesn't have all the updates to the EOL.

No sense in having an SP1 disc.
No sense in reinstalling Vista at all really. There seems to be a presumption that skeezix would be better off running SP2 with oodles of security patches released in previous decades. Granted, some software would require SP2, and some would even require Platform Update (VLC comes to mind), but skeezix is evidently not using any such software. If we are concerned about his security, skeezix has made it clear that his Vista system is not connected to the internet, which suggests that he has better sense than some. That is a vastly better security precaution than patching Vista to April 2017 (or even January 2020). I do not share Imacri’s belief in the enduring value of old patches because Microsoft says otherwise. I also do not participate in discussions of custom ISOs because Microsoft holds exclusive rights to Windows Vista and has never relinquished redistribution rights AFAIK.

I'm thinking that my past problems have been due to a faulty contact in the cable between the power supply and the HD's power connector. After getting that fixed, everything is running fine, and I didn't need to reinstall Vista or anything else for that matter. The computer will remain out of the reach of the internet.

I did download the ISO version of Vista SP1 and created an installation DVD that appears to work on the Vista computer. I'm going to save that DVD in case the HD itself goes belly-up.

I agree. Anymore it's hard to even install 7 on modern hardware. It's been almost 5 years since they stopped updating Vista and you can forget about driver support. I only run Vista on a Virtual machine now and I don't come here that often anymore. FYI you have to have a serial number to use vista.

Wither 3 can share his copy if he likes.

The good news is that I have just tested dism++ again and it is working better now. It can download and install all the updates to eol.

I suggest only installing 20 or so a time, then reboot.

Sometimes it fails to downlaod, so just click the blue Install Updates button again and it usually gets them on the second try.

I takes a little patience.

In case of difficulty, the whole package for x64 (64 bit)is here Dism++10.1.1002-Vx64.7z

In caseof difficulty, the whole package for x86 (32 bit) is here Dism++10.1.1002-Vx86.zip

Just to clarify and close this thread...

I keep my Vista computer running so I can use the program Corel Draw 12. I disconnected it from the internet and reinstalled Windows Vista SP1 (which did not require "activation", BTW). I then installed MS Word, MS Excel, an old version of Snagit, and the Corel program. I did not attempt to update Windows Vista to SP2 and I did NOT reconnect it to the internet. Now I am free from a multitude of problems that kept popping up when the computer was connected to the internet. I didn't have to buy and learn another, newer Draw program 'cause Version 12 works perfectly. I don't use that computer very much but when I do, it's a real lifesaver.

Better late than ever. I know you want to close it out but I'm guessing the problems when the internet is connected occur because you don't have the Windows Updater set to never check for updates. However, since it does what you want, don't fix it.
