Well it's been a long wait for some of you, but SP1 has finally been released.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

You should now be able to grab SP1 from windows update or you can download the stand alone packages from the following links.

Download: Windows Vista SP1 Five Language Standalone

32bit Package (434.5 MB) (x86)

64bit package (726.5 MB) (x64)

I have installed SP1 this afternoon. Although I checked Windows Update and it was listed there, I decided to install it from the CD I created after downloading it yesterday. Installation took around 45 minutes and 2 restarts. So far, so good. Certainly, file copy and transfer appears to be faster. The lack of the 'Search' on the start menu is not missed - I certainly didn't use it, and there is still the search box available which serves the same purpose. The only point to note is that with some Internet Security programs, you might have to acknowledge the fact that certain files have been changed. This is no different to what already happens with some updates, particularly updates for Windows Mail and Cumulative Security Updates for Internet Explorer. This can be slightly irritating, but it shows that the security is picking up the changes which in turn makes the system more secure. If it didn't pick up the changes, then rogue programs would be able to make changes to these files without the user being aware.

First thanks for the email letting us know about the update to sp1.It was a nice suprise in my inbox lol.Downloading sp1 through windows update now 69.2mb.I just looked at update history and the defender update is down as installed earlier.I wasnt at my pc at that time so it did it automatically so i was able to see sp1 update as soon as i clicked on windows update.
will reply again when it is installed.

Am using vista home premium 32bit.

Ok it took me two goes but its installed. On the first go stage two was stuck at 0percent for more than half an hour so i restarted and it worked fine the second time.

My Computer

Would just like to update...when rebooting this morning a couple of times it's now much quicker to boot-up.

A desktop folder with pix I keep adding to from my camera now loads up very very quick. In fact I was amazed.

Tonight will be testing a few games and some file transferring on my little network.

So far I am very pleased with SP1

My Computer

I downloaed x64 SP1 for my OEM Vista some weeks back when it became available on windows update. Then a few days later they took it down due to some other update that had problems.

Should I uninstall SP1 and then re-install using these new links/through update?

No it is the same one as before. Stupid me thought it was different and uninstalled my February SP1. Now I have to put it back.

I had Update do all three of my Vista 64 machines in Feb, (Two Home Premium and one Ultimate) all ran fine after two or three hiccups.

My Computer

Thanks for the emial. The update was 120mb fropm WU for some reason but anyways got no problems. It seems that bootup was faster my usb hard drive got a 3mb/s boost lol seems to be useing about 3% less memory and cpu on idle. Took them long enough but i am happy. Now for some reason windows dreamscene stops playing when i view a window on full screen then close it:cry: click pause video then play and it does not do anything until i change to a different video.

My Computer

Thanks for the Link John.
Just installed it over a fresh install of Vista X64.

So, those of you who've installed this, what is your version number? Is it the same as those of us who've jumped the gun a month ago? Is it 6.0.6001.18000?

My Computer

I have updated my Vista business 64bit from the full file download.
I feel my Vista returned to the early bad days before I have tuned it.
The system is stuck every 10 minutes, something is wrong there.
Has some1 else feel the same?

Its here finally!

Could someone tell me the size the update takes after installation? I'm kinda short on space on my system drive. just gimme the size difference so that I can burn some stagnant stuff to a DVD to make room for SP1. Thanks to whoever sent e-mail notification for this thread.

PS: I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit with BitLocker installed

Ok, I just uninstalled the RC and installed the real service pack: a 4 hour process it seemed. The reinstall actually took only an hour and a half compared to 3 hours like it did the first time, so they excised some poop from the SP.

What's missing? The RC was 548 MB and the SP is 434 MB. thats 100 whole megabytes of poop removed.

Also, there was an issue that the "Program Compatibility Assistant" was Hard-Blocking a buncha programs, one of them being Acronis Disk Director and True Image Workstations which worked perfectly from Day 1 of Vista for me.

This pissed me off very much yesterday when I REALLY needed to run Acronis on a drive and I was informed the the Compatibility Asssisstant was blocking Acronis.

I found (Link) THIS very simple fix from Microsloth, but you must needs download and install the frickin (Link) Application compukability toolkit to remove the Hard Block from the Program that is blocked (If listed in the program)

By the looks of it, LOTS of real good useful programs are blocked by PCA.

The whole Program Compatibility Assistant needs to be forcibly removed and yanked out by the roots from VistPoop- That hardblock POS really pisses me off, and it is worthless.

I'll choose what programs I want to run, thank you, not MS. I do appreciate that they even gave us this way to defeat the hard blocks, albeit that it is too complex a solution for the average PC user, which will force updates of previously useful programs

(They already updated Everest and NOD32 to Vista-Style applications, and both of these programs are officially off the useful list as of the updates... The older versions are still useful)

This is my chief complaint about SP2- That PCA crap has gotta go- Microsoft needs to put out an update that will allow non sophisticated users to turn that feature off.

PS: Dragor it does not look like the result takes up much more disk space, but you probably need a few GBs to run the update process, I just did it with only 50 GB to spare

Hi Dragor

If I understand you correctly
most people that get it from WU
are getting close to 70 MB.
If they have kept up with previous
updates, and don't have a lot to make up.

Hope this helps!

Later Ted

Can any one help please... Ive tried nearly everything to install SP1 download, public and then when checking my windows updates found it there to download with some other tools to help. I installed these b ut the SP1 will not install. gets to 13% then error code 80073712 comes up and I have to try again, same thing happens. Ive tryed restarting , checked disk space, even read the learn how to install SP1 from help and how to forum. No luck again My system is vista home basics 32bit. Ive checked drivers and it says all is up to date. very confusing for a semi learner. help...

My Computer

I had to download the 32-bit Standalone SP-1 which is some 435 KB as the standalone version contains 5language versions and all the previous critical updates that I already had. I could not find the WU 65 KB SP-1. The standalone download only took 20 minutest but the install took almost 3 hours, When it was finished I had no connection to the internet through cable modem hard wire or through cable modem+kinksys wireless. It apparently wiped out all my network connection requirements. So I was forced to do a system resore. Vista's Automatic Update keeps returning the message that there are no new updatesavailable. It always reports when other installs are available. I have installed all the latest defender updates so I assume that is not the problem. I'm wondering if others are experiencing the same problem with Automatic Update. Is MS perhaps
rolling out the WU version in geographic areas or by some other pattern? I am running Home Premuim version. Thanks. John

Thank you XweAponX and BareFootKid for your response! Now another question:

Can we slipstream SP1 inside Vista setup and then burn it as Vista with SP1 setup?

Also, could it be possible to make the above DVD bootable?

I'd really hate to reinstall SP1 if i ever re-install Vista, plus, a friend wants to know whether or not it can be done in the first place.

Thanks!

It can be, just not as easily as Windows XP SP2 could be slipstreamed into Windows XP.

Honestly? I think by the time I've figured it out, we'll all be discussing Vista SP2, or installing Windows 7....
