Services.msc + OneCare

I will set up a new account in safe mode, and see what happens.

What happens is that when I log on normally and access the new account, created in safe mode with administrative privileges, I get the Welcome screen, along with the never-to-go-away blue circle. I have to press the power button on the laptop, to restart.

Some process is causing a problem, try this, if you can.
BTW. Get much snow? I saw that we are in the same area. I am in CT.

Just a few inches.

Could not access msconfig in normal mode. Booted into safe, and changed config for a clean boot.

Have now restarted normally, and the first thing I tried was typing mscong into start search....

Nada. It just sets there, but at least the blue circle is nowhere to be found. However I cannot do anything else with the start menu. It will display, but I can't type anything into the search box, can't access the control panel etc... in all cases I get the 'bing' noise. Logged off using taskmsg, logged back on and tried services.msc with the same result as msconfig.

Sigh....

My Computer

Well, at least when I go into msconfig in safe mode it appears that the config changes I made are in effect. 'Course it doesn't help me to do much in normal mode.

My Computer

Go back a few posts, and try the sfc that I suggested.

After that try the repair install.

Still haven't left...
sfc done...
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log"

OK now we are getting somewhere. Heres a MSoft secret. That sfc can only fix one file at a time. Run it a few times.

Okay, have returned, and am running the third pass of scannow (I assume I can simply stay on that DOS screen, hit the up arrrow to display the last command, and then hit enter? - at least that's what I've been doing...)

When will I know to stop? When I no longer get the corrupt files that it was unable to fix? If so, any idea how many runs it might take?

My Computer

Hope that you had an enjoyable dinner.

TY so much for your rep, I truly hope that I can find a solution.

To answer your question. Other Members of the Forum use the number 3. I do not understand why that number is magic. I would do it at least 3 times. Check the log after each attempt, if the list of potential corruption is decreasing, just keep trying until the process does not seem to help.

Again, as in our last post, if I do not answer right away, I did not forget about you. I will at minimum tell you that I am out of ideas.

I have just completed my 5th runthrough, and even armed with the link you posted I have no idea if any repair is actually taking place. I have, after pass #4, rebooted into normal mode, & attempted to run services.msc with no change from what it was doing earlier.

My Computer

Do you have a Vista DVD? I am not going to suggest a reinstall, but rather a repair install, but you need a DVD.

So, can I assume that Vista came preinstalled on the computer?

We probably can get this fixed, but I have two questons.

First, I read the entire thread, again, quickly, I did not see a mention of System Restore, if not used, go back a week before the problem started and then see if it works.

Second: If necessary, how do you feel about going back to factory specs, the way it was the day you bought the computer. No progarms etc. As far as updates, you only have to install the 3 SP and a few updates that were not included in the SP
The above is the recovery drive.
