Services.msc + OneCare

I think that it has come down to a recovery. I will do everything in my power to help. If you want to do the recovery, and you can get your hands on another laptop we can try to do it together.
No need for another laptop... I'm currently typing this on an emachines with XP
Here is the recovery procedure again.

Laptop Recovery Instructions - Tech Support Forum

Look at post number 3.
<F10> takes me 'to Setup Bios Options'. '<F11> to System Recovery', F9 to Change Boot Device Order, F2 to Startup Check, F1 to System Information, Esc to Enable Startup Messages.
You should be given the option for a non destructive recovery, which if works is great. You will not lose anything and will not even have to use your back up.
Perhaps I should, but alas I am not...

F11 open the recovery manager. 'Use this program to recover your computer to its original factory condition. For additional information, refer to your documentation.'

3 buttons at the bottom - Advanced options, Next and Cancel.
Advanced Options brings up 4 choices
* Computer checkuo
* Microsoft System Restore
* File Backup Program
* System Recovery

My Computer

Choice 4, System Recovery: "This process will reinstall the original factory shipped software. All user-created files will be lost. All files created after purchase, and all programs installed sfter purchase will be lost."

It doesn't actually say 'Bend over and grab your ankles', but that seems to be the sentiment.

My Computer

Ill be here on and off.

I suggested another laptop, in the event that you wanted my help as you did the recovery.

You will use f11 for the recovery

According to what you have given me the only option given is factory specs with loss of all your data. You will have to back up everything that is important.

I would suggest Microsoft system restore, but this is what you already used. It is the system restore that you indicated did not work. I will not work, now, either.

I think its option 4 or nothing. But, as you told me everything is already backed up. So this need not really be a concern. The warning that they give you is to indicate in strong terms, everything will be lost; but you will have an OS as good as day one.

When this is all done, I will tell you what to do, so you are never in this situation, again.

Any questions, just ask

Again, I am willing to help during the process, if you keep in contact using a different computer, while you fix the other.

I gave you the facts as I see them. Tell me what is best for you.

It will work, when done, tell me. Based upon all that you have told me, we are doing the right thing. When done, install your programs. Do not use one care.

Use malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials and the MS Firewall or another.

After you are all set up with programs, Anti Virus etc. I will tell you how to make sure you never have this situation again.

You mean that since I copied MS Office to the external drive, I'll need the key codes after I copy it back?

Yes programs need to be reinstalled. You need the key and DVD.

Take your time, I think that it is done. I will monitor this thread for questions or problems. When you tell me that everything is ok, we will set you up so this never happens again.

OK, just reload the programs. It was aggrevating, but your OS is like new. No corruption, malware or problems.

In addition to Security Essentials, get Malwarebytes. Run a scan with both at least once a week. In addition download this and make an image of your HD once a month. If you ever have a problem like this, again, you will be all set.
