I disabled all my starting programs and this it took 1min45sec to shut down. In my opinion, this is still very slow as no programs are loaded. Could it be the Microsoft Services ?

If I enabled Emsisoft Anti-Malware + Windows update, Bluetooth + No Autoruns, shut down time will be 1min52sec.

Then, if I add Hitman Pro + Rollback RX, both enabled, shut down time is 1min56sec

Okay, let's have another go then.

Hold the Windows key and press R to bring up the run dialogue box. Copy and paste the following into the box and press OK, it'll open notepad with some text in it, copy and paste all of that into your next reply please.

cmd /c reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" > a.txt && notepad.exe a.txt

Hello Ashanta,

Thanks for doing that for me :) It makes it so much easier to help people when they are good with computers. Well here's the contents of that registry key:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000001
"DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000000
"LargeSystemCache"=dword:00000001
"NonPagedPoolQuota"=dword:00000000
"NonPagedPoolSize"=dword:00000000
"PagedPoolQuota"=dword:00000000
"PagedPoolSize"=dword:00000000
"PhysicalAddressExtension"=dword:00000000
"SecondLevelDataCache"=dword:00000000
"SessionPoolSize"=dword:00000004
"SessionViewSize"=dword:00000030
"SystemPages"=dword:000c3000
"PagingFiles"=hex(7):3f,00,3a,00,5c,00,70,00,61,00,67,00,65,00,66,00,69,00,6c,\
  00,65,00,2e,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,00,00,00,00
"ExistingPageFiles"=hex(7):5c,00,3f,00,3f,00,5c,00,43,00,3a,00,5c,00,70,00,61,\
  00,67,00,65,00,66,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,2e,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,00,00,00,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters]
"BootId"=dword:00000038
"BaseTime"=dword:141b0c43
"VideoInitTime"=dword:0000002e
"EnableSuperfetch"=dword:00000003
"EnablePrefetcher"=dword:00000003
"EnableBootTrace"=dword:00000000

I'm hoping that the cause of your problem is one of these :) the ClearPageFileAtShutdown key is known to cause slow shutdowns and your registry key is enabling this.

Do you feel confident with changing a registry key? If so, open up regedit again and navigate to here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

You will see the ClearPageFileAtShutdown key on that list like so:

Name: Type: Data:
ClearPageFileAtShutdown REG_DWORD 0x0000001 (1)

Double click on this and change the Value Data to 0. Ignore the other boxes. Then reboot and let us know how it goes :)

If you don't want to touch your registry, I can write you a fix to do it for you.

Fingers crossed!

Tom

Hi Tom,

This time it took 1 min to shut down. I will need a few more tests, so the best will be to wait 2 days more.

1. I have also a long time boot that I need to fix.

2. When entering into my User account, the message 'Welcome' last too long time, 33sec and even longer. From time to time, the screen appearing black for 1 or 2sec before the dekstop will appear.As you know I've only 2 programs starting, Rollback and Emsisoft Anti-Malware.

I think that that may be one of your problems. An absolute minimum amount of ram for Vista is 2 gb. If you don't have enough ram that might cause slow boot up time and will most certainly result in overall poor performance. If you get more ram you should find that you have better performance however for almost running nothing 1 min is still way too long. You don't have full drive encryption enabled or do you? That increases boot time. How many anti viruses do you have? You should have no more than one. I don't know anything about those particular programs.

Hi Tom,

I have Rollback Rx (instantaneous images backup program) which protect datas on my HD, but I dn't know how exactely it works.

I have Emsisoft Anti Malware and Hitman Pro (but this one,it's not appear on the system tray, only works on demand).

About memory, these were coming when I bought the Amilo Pro in 2008. I've not changed since that time.

Hi Ashanta,

Well at least it's helped a little :) Have you got an NVIDIA graphics card?

Also, have you seen this post?

What about that?

Okay, let's try another tack then.

Defrag your computer with this:

Disk Defrag - Fast and Safe Defragmenter for Your Disks

Run CCleaner:

CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

NOT THE REGISTRY PART

Run a Check Disk scan:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html

Checking EventViewer:

Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Ok Tom,

"You don't have full drive encryption enabled or do you?" I don't know if Rollback Rx encrypt or not the drive, I don"t think so, but not sure neither.
For defragmenting, I have to use the one coming with Rollback Rx, not an external one. On the contrary, I will need to uninstall Rollback Rx.

I will do it on tomorrow too late for now.

Hi Tom,

I can't defragment with Auslogics Defrag neither optimizer with CClean.
Rollback Rx has a build-in defragmenter.

Look at the following :

About Rollback Rx :

Use of Defragmenter Programs – Once installed, Rollback Rx blocks the use of defragmentation programs. The reason for this is that Rollback Rx tracks sector change activity, relocates some sectors, and maintains its own map of all sector locations on the hard drive. Defragmentation is the process of locating the noncontiguous sectors of a file and rearranging the sectors and restoring them into fewer sectors. As a result, once Rollback Rx is installed, the work done by a defragmentation program would not provide the desired result without knowing the sectors used by other snapshots. Thus, defragmentation programs are blocked. The need for a defragmenter varies according to file system and the amount of file creation and update activity on a hard drive. Horizon Datasys recommends that defragmentation be done before installing Rollback Rx. In addition, Rollback Rx has a build-in defragmenter as the alternative.

I bet that rollback rx is slowing it down. Also not that it does encrypt the hard drive and that does slow down boot time.

Hi Ashanta,

That's great news :party: Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Your errors log looks fine to me so I can't see any remaining problems.

Let me know if anything else comes up, but for now, I'll mark the thread solved. I'll still be here if you have any further questions :)

Tom
