Slow when shutting down

So it's gone from 231s to 236s to 226s and then to 87s? Sounds strange.

To be honest I doubt you'll get anything much faster than that with your computer specs. Your RAM is the minimum requirement for Vista. If it's really annoying you, then you could look into ReadyBoost (using USB devices as RAM basically):

Using memory in your storage device to speed up your computer

Also, here's a few tips you could do:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html

Especially these two:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70563-boot-up.html

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70567-shutdown.html

Tom

I don't consider 1 gb to be the minumim requirements. It really should be 2 gb even if M$ only says one. I've never put stock in their minimum or even recommended amounts. Keep in mind that although Vista requires basically the same amount of ram as it did when it came out the programs people use on their computers have changed and usually those changes require more resources (especially ram) many of them also have smaller programs or services that they like to run all the time-even when the program isn't in use. Those cumulatively bog down windows and fill up your ram. In addition I notice on my desktop that eventually Vista starts to consume more and more ram. For example it is using up about 800 mb upon boot up (I have lots of stuff turned off) but after several days it'll be up to 1300 and not go down. You'll benefit immensely from more ram.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out. I'm running 2GB at the moment and even that isn't very much :( I dread to think what it's like with 1GB.

I only have 2 gig but I don't do that much with it so it suffices. Any computer that doesn't have enough ram is going to be slow simply because it has to depend upon virtual memory using the hard drive to make up the difference. Even a SSD is slower than memory.

With Check the Number of Processors Used at Boot Up

171sec Win !!! :D:D

I can tell you now that the average boot time is aroung 177sec.

I can't remember if I tell you that my slow computer is related to a KSOD (Black Screen) I experienced in different scenarios :

1. KSOD when booting (windows logon appeared in my case)
2. KSOD when logging into my account (before appearing the dekstop)
3. KSOD when closing my account
4. KSOD when I change into another account, ie, from user account to admin account (KSOD during more than 15sec)

I hear that maybe something is corrupt or wrong with Explorer.exe, Taskmgr.exe and Winlogon.exe

I don't think we're going to be able to do much better than 171s! :) I've completely ran out of ideas.

We can check those files by doing the following:

SFC Scan

  1. Open the start menu
  2. In the search box, type cmd
  3. Right click on cmd and select Run as administrator
  4. In command prompt, type:

    sfc /scannow

  5. Let it run and let me know if it finds any Integrity Violations

I'll have to ask for help with the BSODs if they are persistent?

Tom

Hi Tom,

Here are a few screenshots taken on the Safe Mode of my drivers (please check it, appearing 2 times, is that normal ?), processes and services. One of these processes or services, is causing the black screen.

PS: KSOD also occurs in Safe Mode when I logg out an account.

Hi Ashanta,

I'd guess you have two drivers because you have two processors :)

Don't worry about multiple instances of processes in task manager, it's perfectly normal.

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/57195-same-processes-running-multiple-times-task-manager.html

For whatever reason, depending on what the process is, it is common for there to be more than one of that process in Task Manager.

The SFC comes back good, meaning that all of your system files are intact - so your worries about explorer.exe, winlogon.exe and taskmgr.exe need not exist any more :)

I will ask for help concerning the BSODs, I have absolutely no idea how to handle them. Whilst we're waiting for our expert, it would be a good idea to follow this post and attach the necessary files to your next post. Just post it here, don't worry about starting a new thread :)

Tom

I have reviewed your thread. I think there are not many steps that can be taken at this point. If it were my computer, I would make a system restore point, and then install Lasso
Process Lasso - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Based upon past experience, Lasso will solve your problem or require that you remove it via System Restore. Others that tried to uninstall it have reported problems, but the vast majority had their initial problem solved.

Hi Tom,

Did you see that I have 2 entries for my graphics card in the Device Manager ?

I made a few captures because I hear that KSOD is also causing by bad, corrupt services and process, not only by those like winlogon, taskmgr and explorer.

To Rich :

Hi Rich,

I already tried Lasso on my old settings and it didn't work. I will try it once more to see if this can solve my issue.

Once I installed Lasso, are you give me the steps on solving this issue ? Lasso looks like a process explorer with more extended features than Task Manager.

Although, I am grateful that I never had the need for the software, myself, it is my understanding that you just let it run and it prioritizes programs that are necessary to make your comuter run smoothly. Bottom line, if you are running good now, just let it do its thing.
If it is not working, we will try another route.

Ok, rich !

I run on Safe Mode, no problems, shutdown quickly.

This afternoon I got again the following troubles either on Safe Mode (with EAM scanning) either Safe Mode with Networking.

I remind you that with Tom, shutdown issue was fixed ;)
