Chromium and other derivatives are still supporting XP & Vista.
Well I don't use Chromium or other derivatives, but as I pointed out a week ago (post #271), the Chromium Project has been working all year to remove support for Vista and XP: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=579196. Opera 37 does not support Vista or XP, but Opera has promised that there will be security fixes for earlier versions: Initial Opera developer 37 release - Opera Desktop. That is probably the best offer that Vista users will get from any Chromish browser, but Windows 7 users such as Josh can of course continue to use Chrome for a few more years without any such concerns.

That statement seemed reasonable in July 2016, but that was then; this is now. One security update for Opera 36 was issued in August 2016, but there hasn't been another update since then (see ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera-winxpvista/). Opera 36.0.2130.80 would probably still work in 2018, but Opera no longer supports Vista.

The last browser that I regularly used on Vista was Firefox, which is also about to end support (see Update on Firefox support for Windows XP and Vista – Future Releases).

They might have said that they would continue to update 36 but did they say how often? Maybe once every blue moon? I suppose even doing it once does count, technically. I'm past Vista. I don't often even open my Vista VM.

I am still with FF = 52.8.0 and no problems is that FF2 or FF3 or even FF1?
Hello mich. As I tried to explain last month when you were having trouble reinstalling Vista, there will be no more security updates for Firefox ESR 52 after next month. Furthermore, ESR 52 is more than a year old now. At the moment I am using Firefox 58.0.2 on Windows 10, which is the actual current version for supported operating systems. I wish there was a good alternative browser for those who are still trying to use Vista, but in my opinion there is not - which is the main reason I am not using Vista at the moment. (I still watch TV on my old Vista PC, but that's about it these days.) Certain minor Firefox-based browsers (e.g. Pale Moon 27) have not yet announced an end of support for Vista, but they are all based on outdated Firefox code and will be ending support for Vista when their next versions are released.

I appreciate all the help that I have received from people on this forum but it looks as if the end is neigh just as I have everything running sweetly but I shall struggle on to the end.
So support will end but that won’t stop you using Vista or will it just become increasingly more difficult to access certain web sites and be more vulnerable to hacking etc. The same thing will happen to each Windows version so that you are forced to buy new versions each 10 years or so, I suppose we can’t do much about it personally I would prefer to pay an annual fee and be kept up to date until my computer dies.

Well at least one other member is manually downloading updates for 2008 which is still supported (until 2020) and installing them on Vista however that doesn't change the fact that not only are the browsers out of support but also the major antivirus/antimalware scanners. Also itunes is out of support as is the latest version of ios. Newer games are only for 7 or higher and possibly only 10 for some. Other than that I haven't kept track about what is supported and what isn't. As for websites your biggest problem would be in using IE. That already has been unsupported on microsoft and google websites. Any others will likely support the latest Vista compatible browsers. Staying on Vista is your choice but if you can afford it you might want to go with 7 for $120. It is very similar to Vista and has a few things I like about it that Vista doesn't have. With 7 you will still be supported for almost 2 years until 1/14/20. You can still buy legit copies from Newegg. Please note though that the only copies available cannot be transferred to another computer. Windows 7, 8 and 10 Home and Professional - Newegg.com

I'm using FF 52.8.1, the aformentioned version of Opera and IE 9. Which one I use depends on which websites I need to access.

I should also mention that Norton Security still supports Vista.

Thanks for the reference, Vistaar. I can live with everything mentioned there. I don't use Identity Safe so that's not an issue. I also update my Norton Security subscription directly through Symantec.

I do use Win 7 on another system for software that's not Vista compatible. If I have to leave Vista, I would probably spend $3K to buy a new system and use Win 10. I don't know where one would buy a retail copy of Win 7.

I don't think that you can buy a retail copy anymore except through a private seller at Amazon or eBay but I wouldn't trust a copy through either. You can still buy OEM copies through Newegg and I would trust it coming from Newegg. Windows 7, 8 and 10 Home and Professional - Newegg.com

Thanks townsbg.

I agree about not trusting anyone at eBay when it comes to software (never buy a serial number) but Amazon has some pretty good controls on the sellers. I've never had a problem returning something that I bought from that website.

With other software, most OEM versions don't have all the features. Not sure if that's the case with a OEM version of Win 7. Since OEM versions are usually machine specific, I don't know if buying OEM would be portable from one system to another.

I'll certainly keep it in mind.

Being OEM it isn't transferable to another computer. Only a retail is.

It would be astonishing if a browser based on Chromium 67 worked on Vista.
It would be even more astonishing if a browser based on Chromium 69 worked on Windows Vista and XP - but such a browser actually exists in 2019: 360 Extreme Explorer, from the same Chinese company that makes Qihoo 360 antivirus. Am I using this browser? Absolutely not! I never liked the idea of Google gathering telemetry about me, and as an American I am even less inclined to tolerate Chinese telemetry. As I have mentioned above, I no longer use Vista as a web-browsing platform even though I am still the proud owner of a vintage Vista system. On the other hand, this forum serves the needs of Vista users worldwide. A considerable percentage of Vista's remaining users are probably Chinese. These users may have studied English, and there is probably a Chinese equivalent of Google Translator. Should we advise Vista users in China to use outdated Western browsers because we do not trust Chinese companies? I think not! There has already been much discussion at MSFN: Extreme Explorer 360 (Chromium 69) - General Discussion. Forum member @Tatl might perhaps be interested in this browser.
